Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon (born October 30, 1987) is a Filipino mixed martial artist, Wushu Champion and the current ONE Championship Interm Bantamweight Champion[1]. He is the former Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) Flyweight Champion[2] and has competed in several Asian based MMA Promotions.[3]
Biography
Kevin Belingon hails from Kiangan, Ifugao, Philippines. At early childhood he idolizes and admire movie icon Bruce Lee, which then inspires him to practice martial arts[4]. Belingon started to pursue his passion in martial arts at the age of 17 and, eventually awarded a wushu scholarship to the University of the Cordilleras. After finishing college, Belingon moved and train in Baguio City.[5]
In Baguio City, he began training at Team Lakay Wushu one of the best MMA stables in the Philippines under famous Filipino coach Mark Sangiao. Although he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, he put his ambitions of pursuing a career in law enforcement to focus full-time on being a professional Martial Artist.
He made his professional debut in 2007 and won his first nine bouts, capturing a flyweight title in the process after beating opponents from all across Asia. ONE Championship, signed Belingon in 2012[6].
Mixed martial arts career
Universal Reality Combat Championship
On June 30, 2007, Kevin Belingon made his professional debut in the Universal Reality Combat Championship, URCC 10: X[7] the event was held on June 30, 2007 at The Fort in Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines in the Fight Card of Eduard Folayang Versus Allan Co. The Ifugao warrior fought Richard Lasprilla for the URCC Flyweight Championship and won via Majority Decision in his first professional MMA fight.[8][9].
After his international fights from abroad "The Silencer", made a comeback fight once again in the URCC 19: Collision Pasay City, Metro Manila on April 2, 2011 against fellow Filipino Isaac Tulinng. A head kick and combination of punches forced the referee to stop the contest awarding Belingon the win via TKO[2].
Martial combat
After 5 fights exclusively in his home country Philippines, Belingon entered the Singapore-based promotion Martial Combat in May 2010 in his first international fight against Thailand Fighter Ngoo Ditty, and won via First round TKO[10].
Legend Fighting Championship
More than a month, after his fight in Martial Combat Promotions, he fought under the banner of Legend Fighting Championship MMA Promotions based in China. Winning against Nam Jin Jo of South Korea via Unanimous Decision on June 2010[11] and Dalai Bayin of China in round 1 Submission on September 2010[12].
ONE Championship
Made his debut in the promotion against leg lock legend Masakazu Imanari in ONE Fighting Championship: War of the Lions March 2012[13]. The Japanese icon lived up to his moniker, submitting the Filipino in the opening round via heel hook. Belingon would fail to redeem himself in his next bout, as he lost by unanimous decision against Korean contender Soo Chul Kim[14], who went on to become the inaugural ONE World Bantamweight Champion two months later[15].
After back-to-back set back, "The Silencer” entered ONE FC Bantamweight Grand Prix Tournament avenged himself with back-to-back stoppages against Yusup Saadulaev[16], and Than Vu of Australia but coming up short against Masakatsu Ueda for the final round of ONE FC Bantamweight Grand Prix[17].
On January 2016, after a win against Koetsu Okazaki[18], he was granted an opportunity to challenge for the world championship against current kingpin Bibiano Fernandes[19]. He loss this title fight via Kimura in the very first round[20].
The Filipino started his climb back to the top, with a unanimous decision victory over Muin Gafurov in October 2016. He followed it up with a pair of explosive first round stoppages of former world title contenders Toni Tauru[21], and Reece McLaren in 2017[22], before capping the year off with a unanimous decision win against Kevin Chung[23].
On April 2018, the main event of ONE Championship: Heroes of Honor has featured Belingon facing off with another former title challenger Andrew Leone, Belingon dominated first round, until a spinning side-kick to the liver, sent Andrew Leone to the canvass, ground and pound ensued and the referee Olivier Coste stop the contest awarding Kevin Belingon Second Round stoppage win[24].
In Pasay City, Philippines on ONE Championship: Reign of Kings[25] featured Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon faced Two Division ONE Championship Titlist Martin Nguyen. After intense back to back action, he defeated the Vietnamese-Australian, winning by Unanimous Decision[26] and capturing the ONE Championship Interm Bantamweight Champion[27].
