Khati, Uttarakhand

Khati is a surname native to the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Khati caste is a direct descendant of the Katyuri Kings who were a medieval ruling clan of Uttarakhand believed to have descended from Bargujar ruler from Ayodhya. This links the Khati caste with Suryavansha. At Faldakot, a member of the Khati caste became the king of the Katyuri dynasty.

About 600 years ago, Katyuri Kings who ruled most of current north India and had split into several smaller territories . At the same time Chand dynasty started growing their kingdom Champawat and eventually succeeded in making Almora their capital. Faladakot was close to Kumaon-Garhwal border and a place for Katyuri dynasty kings to safely reside - Papara and Sangura villages around the region wer given as a gift to the Khati's by the Garhwal King. The last Katyuri's king's wife, Jiyaraje - the queen and mother of the Katyuri princes' was from the Khati family, hence the reason for the Katyuri Kings to use Khati from thereon.
