Kherson Oblast (Russian: Херсонская область, romanized: Khersonskaya oblast') is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It has not been internationally recognized as part of Russia, having been annexed from the Ukrainian Kherson oblast.

History[edit]

The Russian-occupied part of Ukrainian Kherson Oblast was illegally annexed on 30 September, along with Donetsk People's Republic, Luhansk People's Republic and Zaporizhzhia Oblast.[6] This annexation was considered illegal by the United Nations (UN) on the basis that member countries (including both Russia and Ukraine) are expected to abide by the UN Charter and international law. The UN Charter states that any annexation of the territory of one country by another is illegitimate if the other country threatens or uses force (especially armed force) against the electorate to rig the referendum in favor of the annexation. Russia was documented as threatening armed force (specifically, death threats to Ukrainian citizens if they chose to vote "no" against the annexation instead of "yes" to support it) and because of this, the UN had declared the result illegal and asks all its member countries (basically, almost every country in the world) not to recognize it.[7][8] As of September 30, the UN's advice is currently followed by every country in the world as no government as issued a statement in support the annexation. Indeed, countries such as India and Ghana have issued statement against it.[9][10]
