On December 4, 2020, Casey Goodson, a 23-year-old black man, was killed in Columbus, Ohio by Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputy, Jason Meade. No bodycam footage of the incident was retrieved due to the fact that the Franklin County Sheriff's task force officers are not issued with any type of body cameras.[1][2]. Preliminary information came after Goodson was shot, under disputed circumstances. Law enforcement officials said that the deputy saw Goodson driving with a gun [citation needed]. After the autopsy, it was reported he was shot multiple times. It was ruled a homicide.
Franklin County Coroner Dr. Anahi Ortiz reported that he was shot in the torso outside his home northeast. At a press conference, his family said Goodson was walking home from a dentist's appointment carrying a Subway sandwich when he was killed.
Meade's attorney said Goodson pointed a handgun at Meade. It was also confirmed a handgun was retrieved from the scene, according to Columbus Police. Goodson's family said that Goodson had a concealed carry permit, and waving a gun around was out of character for him.
Jason Meade
Michael Jason Meade is a 17-year veteran SWAT Deputy of Franklin County Sheriff's Office who is currently assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force.[3] He graduated from Franklin Heights High School and later went on to serve in the Marine reserves. [3] The sheriff's office hired Meade in 2003. In 2007, pending an IA investigation, Meade was given a No Inmate Contact Status which prevented him from being around inmates while on duty. An explanation was failed to be provided. In 2011, the status was withdrawn.[4] He received lower rankings on his performance evaluation which was conducted in 2010. His personnel file suggests that Meade has checked only 9 out of 20 complaints received in 2009 and 4 out of 12 in 2010 and the progress report on a case of an elderly man who was robbed was delayed by 7 months.[5] This resulted in Meade being removed from the Special Investigative Unit and later returned to the Jackson Pike Jail assignment during the same year of his performance evaluation. [6] He was transferred from patrol to SWAT in 2014. Meade was a part of seven Franklin County SWAT deputies who fired their guns during the Pike County shootings which took place on April 21–22, 2016.[7] His September, 2020 performance evaluation shows three above expectation rankings. It suggests that Meade is an honest man who is highly motivated, always counted on, thinks things through and makes command decisions for his peers. [8]
Family and Public Reaction
Almost 300 people gathered at downtown Columbus to protest against the murder. Kiara Yaktia, 31 years old, organized the protest.
"[We are] coming together, uniting across multiple organizations to take a united stand for Casey Goodson Jr. This young, beautiful, ambitious, intelligent, loyal, proud, inspirational, 23-year-old youth was taken from us recklessly and disgustingly. At this point, no one can deny there is a problem. The chief of police, no matter how much he likes to, can no longer deny that there is a problem. We are here to tell them not one more name. Federal officials and local authorities went on to investigate Meade.[9]
Afterwards, about 100 protesters gathered at Franklin County Government Center, after 6pm.
