Kobold Siege is a 2021 shoot 'em up Metroidvania video game, created by the indie developer Stopsignal. The game follows an anthropomorphic Kobold who enters a royal castle to rescue his family, who have been kidnapped by Chef the King and his soldiers.
Originally, the game was supposed to be made for the Newgrounds Egg Jam in July 2021, but was not finished in time. Afterwards, Stopsignal decided to expand it into a full game, releasing it on November 18, 2021.
Gameplay
Kobold Siege is a 2D shoot 'em up, metroidvania, where player take control over anthropomorphic Kobold, whose family and its unborn eggs are kidnapped by Chef the King and his soldiers.[1] After finding a rifle gun, Kobold enters the castle to save its family and "wreak havoc" among the kidnappers in process.[2][3][4][‡ 1]
At the start of the game, the player's character can jump, shoot, aim and interact. As they progress through the game, players gain new abilities and items to use in combat with the enemies or for navigation.[1][2] Some of them and their upgrades can be purchased in the shop by exchanging previously-collected coins.[2] Map can be also used for easier navigation of the castle.[3]
The player's character also has health points seen at upper left corner of the screen. In order to recover it, the player must destroy the barrel with the health point recovery potion with a + sign inside. If the player's health reaches zero, they will start from the previously-reached checkpoint.[2]
Through out the game, the player will encounter enemies, each one of them having their own strengths and weaknesses; "some explode, others hide behind powerful shields."[3] To complete the game, the player must reach and defeat the final boss. In order to reach it, the player must collect keys by defeating bosses across the castle and "repeatedly demonstrate supernatural dexterity".[3]
Development and release
Kobold Siege was initially intended for the Newgrounds Egg Jam in July 2021, but was not finished in time. Instead of cancelling the project, the game's creator Stopsignal decided to expand it, which works on it was later confirmed in September.[3][‡ 2] The game was released on Microsoft Windows[lower-alpha 1] in November 18.[5][‡ 1][‡ 3]
