Koray Erdogan (April 16, 1968) is a Turkish hair transplant surgeon and President of the World FUE Institute. He has done work in the field of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) in Europe.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and career[edit]

Dr. Koray Erdogan was born in the province of Gemlik in Bursa, to Abdullah, a lawyer, and Nuray, a housewife. He attended Hacettepe University in 1988, receiving his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine in 1994. After his studies at Hacettepe University, Dr. Erdogan went on to Kastamonu to complete his obligatory medical service.

After completing his service, he started working as an assistant in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Marmara University. Following this, he became a member of the Acibadem Hospital Group, working in the Intensive Care Unit.

In 2000, Dr. Erdogan began to develop his skills in the field of hair restoration in private medical clinics. In 2001, he founded his own hair transplantation clinic, and continued to perform research and work in this field. In 2004, he developed his own technique for Follicular Unit Extraction.[5]

Dr. Erdogan still continues work in this field at his own clinic ASMED in Istanbul, Turkey.[6][7]

Groundbreaking work in hair restoration[edit]

Sequential Technique in FUE[edit]

Through the FUE hair transplant technique developed by Erdogan, individual follicles are extracted one by one, and then transferred directly to the recipient area individually under local anesthesia.[8]

During the surgical procedure, the individual hair follicles are extracted directly from the donor area using tiny punches. They are then quality checked, and immediately placed in micro-sized slits within the recipient (balding) area, resulting in less damage to the scalp, and less scarring.[9] The technique also shortens the time of transfer of the grafts from the donor area to the recipient area, thereby protecting the integrity of the graft.[10][11]

Graft Calculator[edit]

Graft Calculator is an application that helps identify the areas where more hair is required. As a result, the surgeon can obtain better coverage, and create a more homogeneous look. It also helps the medical staff in estimating how many grafts a patient will needs for their procedure, and the approximate cost.[12]

Coverage Value[edit]

The Coverage Value calculation was developed by Dr. Koray Erdogan as an objective method to standardize scientific criteria for calculating coverage through two components; density and thickness. This criteria addresses not only overall coverage, but also creates a standard for avoiding donor depletion, an issue that has been an area of trepidation to hair transplant surgeons for some time and especially where higher graft counts are concerned. Since the two items of greatest concern to both the patient and surgeon is donor capacity and good coverage, this is the main objective of the Coverage Value Calculation.

K.E.E.P. (Koray Erdogan Embedding Placer)[edit]

The K.E.E. P. (Koray Erdogan Embedding Placer) was developed as a dramatic response to graft placement without damage using pre-made incisions. It is made from medical steel type 304 that is 50 microns in thickness and is designed for long-term use. It is available in different sizes that are appropriate to graft size and graft condition with two adaptable types for both left and right hand use. The instrument can undergo normal sterilization processes and is available for both left and right hand application.

KE-BOT[edit]

The KE-Bot, the newest FUE innovation by Dr. Koray Erdogan, is an advanced robotic 360-degree circular scanning system that evaluates all aspects of hair transplantation through high definition photography that provides 3-D scalp modeling and data collection from every angle. This includes the pre-surgical determination of each hair’s caliber and density in the donor area, and overall donor capacity thereby assisting the surgeon to obtain extremely accurate extraction site calculations with potential transection rates. Additionally, the KE-Bot calculates Coverage Value (an important calculation also developed by Dr. Erdogan) affecting both the donor and recipient areas to insure adequate homogenization and density without overharvesting while taking into consideration normal hair loss with aging. Moreover, KE-Bot is able to determine the number of grafts placed in previous surgeries by counting previous extraction sites. Post-surgically, it scans the recipient area and determines the actual number of grafts placed and the density obtained while reporting authentic transection rates in relation to the number of placed grafts. Although the KE-Bot is presently in limited production, it promises to be adopted by surgeons worldwide due to its extreme accuracy.

KE-HEAD[edit]

The KE-Head was developed by Koray Erdogan, M.D. in response to the need to create a life-size model of the head with scalp-like properties for extraction and placement hair restoration surgery training purposes.[15]

KE-REST[edit]

The KE-Rest was developed by Dr. Koray Erdogan to assure patient comfort and support during FUE procedures. Its ergonomic design sustains proper positioning for the patient and the surgeon during long and tedious FUE surgeries while allowing easy access to both donor and recipient areas with relaxation and stress-point relief.

KE-PHOTO[edit]

KE-PHOTO was developed Erdogan, M.D. in response to take patient’s photos in the exact same position with using same light, same direction and same angle. Taking these identical photos allows the surgeons to make a right evaluation before and after surgery.
