Korona is an internationally known nu metal band from Frankfurt am Main, (Germany, Europe) formed in 1998. After several world wide No. 1 hits in the internet charts of the first official music streaming services, also in the United States, they were considered as the representatives of the Nu metal genre in Germany and Europe. According to their own statement, Korona feels at home in several musical styles.

History[edit]

Beginnings, branding and first demo (1996–1998)[edit]

In 1996 the founding members of Korona still played in two different bands, but were close friends, Funk-A-Tac and :blend, but they were already thinking about a joint band project. In the course of the following two years, songs were written together for the project and the sound of Korona was created. The band gives the final founding date to the exact day as August 11, 1998, because exactly one year later a total solar eclipse was to be seen in Germany, which gave the band its name Korona. Accordingly, the first logo of Korona showed the corona of the sun, which can only just be seen in such an eclipse. In order to be able to represent themselves better in the music industry, Korona also founded their own management and music production service Koronamusic in their early days. There were no name disputes with the US-American band Korona, who had a hit with the song Let Me Be in the 1980s and were well known before and after as the band Starbuck, because at that time André Vard contacted the US band in his management function and obtained a declaration of consent to use the name Korona. After Korona got in touch with the well-known music producer Wolfgang Stach via the label GUN Records, they recorded their first EP United States of Origin in 1998, but it didn’t find a place in the program of Sony Music.

Special feature and Breaking The Silence[edit]

What has long been common in Hip Hop was used by Korona in rock music as one of the first bands ever and became their special feature: All languages spoken in the band, English, German, Italian and Yugoslavian, were used in the lyrics of almost all songs. Korona called this mixture of languages City Speak based on the movie Blade Runner. The band has released several unofficial EPs worldwide since 1996. In the milenium year 2000, Korona unofficially released the album Blame, in which electronic sounds, especially in the drums and drum beats, were already part of their music. This was followed by a European tour and appearances with Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, Ill Niño, Static-X, HIM, Papa Roach, Tool and other festival stations such as Rock am Ring[3], Rock im Park[4], Roskilde Festival[5] or Gods of Metal. With the official debut album Breaking The Silence, which was released in 2005 under the independent label Hardfliprecords, Korona landed many hits in the rock and metal charts of the first Category:Music streaming services pushed by MTV, such as the digital music store BeSonic[6], mp3.de, MP3.com, or virtual-volume in Germany, England, Italy, France, Greece, Spain, Russia, Japan, South America and the United States of America. In 2008, Korona announced a hiatus. Although the band confirms that they have composed a lot of new musical material, no further album has been released yet. The band Korona has not officially dissolved. André Vard has expanded Koronamusic as the rights holder to an independent record label and label service that has also opened up to new artists from other genres.
