The Kwaaman State (c.1570-1640), also known as the Kumaseman State between 1640-1701, was an Akan state from around 1570 to 1701, in what is now modern-day Ghana. It was the predecessor to the Ashanti Empire formed in 1670.
History[edit]
History of the Kwaaman State[edit]
Otumfuo Nana Twum, the first first ruler and also the first Kwaamanhene of the Kwaaman State, founded the State around 1570.[1] It seems to have begun as a small agricultural settlement which eventually grew into a large clan state.[2] He died in 1590 and Otumfuo Nana Antwi, probably Nana Twum's son, assumed the throne until his death in 1600. Nana Antwi was succeeded by Otumfuo Nana Kobia Amamfi upon his death, until 1630, when Nana Kobia Amamafi died. During the late 1630s, the Kwaaman State is expanded by its final ruler, Otumfuo Nana Oti Akenten. Nana Oti Akenten wages a series of successful military operations to merge more territory into the Kwaan State, which at this time can be known as the Kumaseman State.
History of the Kumaseman State[edit]
The first ruler of the Kumaseman State, who was also the last ruler of the Kwaaman State, (Nana Oti Akenten) ruled the newly created Kumaseman State for less than one year before dying in 1640.[2] He was succeeded by Otumfuo Nana Obiri Yeboah. During the late 1670s, Nana Obiri Yeboah had been steadily building up a union which would eventually become the Asanti Empire. He died c.1680 and he was succeeded by his sister's son, Osei Kofi Tutu I. Osei Kofi Tutu I ruled between c.1695-1701, when he banded together the Kumaseman State and Denkyira to form the Ashanti Empire. He later ruled the Ashanti Empire from 1701 until his death around 1717.[1]
