Lancom Systems (stylized as LANCOM Systems) GmbH is a German manufacturer of networking hardware. The company develops and produces network switches, routers, VPN systems and firewalls for business customers and public institutions.[1] LANCOM Systems is the leading German network technology manufacturer for the professional and public markets.[2][3] Since 2018, the company has been an independent subsidiary of the Rohde & Schwarz group.
History[edit]
The company was founded in 2002 as a management buyout of parts of the network division of the former ELSA AG following its insolvency.[4] By contrast, the parts of ELSA's network division geared towards private customers formed the core of the separately founded Devolo AG. The brand LANCOM was already used by ELSA for professional networking products, before. In 2016, Munich-based electronics group Rohde & Schwarz acquired a majority stake in Lancom Systems GmbH and the two companies announced a strategic partnership. In the following year, LANCOM Systems was honored by Deloitte with the Sustained Excellence Award as one of the fastest growing IT companies in Germany.[5] In 2018, Rohde & Schwarz acquired the remaining shares in Lancom Systems in full. The company is now managed as an independent subsidiary of the Rohde & Schwarz Group. Together with Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity GmbH, LANCOM Systems forms the Networks and Cybersecurity business unit of Rohde & Schwarz.[6] Firewall development, formerly located at Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity, was transferred to LANCOM Systems GmbH in 2019.[7]
Products[edit]
LANCOM Systems specializes in network solutions for companies and management. This includes routers and access points for WLAN networks, for example. The latter are also offered in hardened form for outdoor use. The range also includes VPN systems certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security in accordance with the Common Criteria.[8][9] In addition, LANCOM Systems offers actively managed and unmanaged switches of various capabilities for the business and public sectors.[10] With its aggregation switches, the company offers products that can serve as the basis for larger hierarchical network infrastructures.[11] LANCOM Systems offers firewall systems that are also approved for government networks requiring special protection, formerly developed by Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity.[12] Most of LANCOM Systems' products use its own firmware called LCOS.[13] In its first years of business, LANCOM also offered wireless network cards with the brand name AirLancer.[14] In the field of VoIP telephone systems, Lancom Systems entered into a partnership with the French manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise in 2020. Accordingly, LANCOM Systems contributes security components for telephone systems.[15] The development and final production of LANCOM Systems products takes place entirely in Germany.[16] In particular, various German authorities and companies in the high-security sector rely on LANCOM products for internal networks. These include, for example, the German Chancellery and several police authorities.[17][18] The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has replaced routers from Cisco Systems with products from LANCOM for security reasons.[18] LANCOM Systems is the only German network technology manufacturer listed in international market surveys for the area of (W)LAN networking.[19][20][21]
