Larry Murphy (criminal)
Larry Murphy is a native of Co. Wicklow, Ireland, whose release from a Dublin prison on 12th August 2010 after serving ten years for the rape and attempted murder of a young woman in 2000, caused a public outcry. He was unexpectedly disturbed and recognized in the midst of his crime by two men who were out hunting foxes, causing him to flee, and saving the young woman's life .[1]
The Irish public see him as a danger to women, more particularly as he had refused treatment while in prison and never demonstrated any remorse. Additionally, under Irish law, his whereabouts did not need to be made known to the Gardai, (the Irish Police force ) before seven days after his release should have passed. The panic about his release was increased due to the links in the public mind to other unsolved murders of women [2] which took place before Larry Murphy was imprisoned, and which ceased afterwards [3] [4] [5]
