Laura Anne Adlington (born 1989). Residing in Halling, Kent, she is a Digital Manager by occupation and is an avid amateur baker. She was a finalist in the Great British Bake Off in 2020, which was filmed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Life and career[edit]

Laura was born in Gravesend, Kent where she lived until she was 18. She has an older brother called Richard. She went to school at Gravesend Grammar for Girls in Gravesend where she studied Drama, Psychology and English. At 18, Laura moved to Cambridge to study English Literature and Creative Writing at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge where she earned a 1st Class Honours degree.

After University Laura started her career writing for technology magazines New Electronics and Eureka. In 2015, Laura started working for South East Water, based in Snodland, as the company's Digital Manager

In 2018 Laura applied to be a volunteer for the Samaritans where she continues to work Laura has a passion and an understanding for mental health and has publicly told of her struggles with anxiety.[1]

Laura Adlington took part in the eleventh series of Great British Bake Off after being a life long fan of the show and applied after a lot of encouragement from friends and family. This was Laura's first time applying for the show. There was doubt about whether the show would be filmed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Laura was described as the messiest baker the show has ever seen but amazed the judges with her flavours. Laura earned Star Baker in the show's fifth episode with "Proper Tasty Pasties" and a Caged Key Lime Tart showstopper. Laura made it to the GBBO 2020 final alongside Dave Friday and Peter Sawkins. Laura said: "I can’t put into words how lucky I feel to be in the final alongside Peter and Dave — two incredible bakers who I’m proud to call my friends," she penned. "I may not be the neatest or the most refined baker, but I put my heart and soul into absolutely everything I make."

Laura received a lot of media attention after the series semi final was aired after having to publicly hit back at online trolls. Paul Hollywood posted to his Instagram after hearing of "some sad people" trolling Laura online.[2] [3] [4]

Laura’s followers rushed to comment on her Instagram post to wish her good luck for the final – including a number of former Bake Off stars. Bake Off winner Dr Rahul Mandal commented: "You are an amazing baker an incredible baker. Never doubt yourself, you are great!! Good luck!". "Proud of you, love,’" Michael Chakraverty added. While Steph Blackwell, a Bake Off finalist from 2019 and former contestant Michelle Evans-Fecci simply posted a heart emoji.

A number of media outlets expressed their love for Laura's relatable and down to earth baking style. Grazia posted an article expressing that Laura was their favourite Baker after just a few episodes had aired.

Personal Life[edit]

Laura moved to Strood, Kent in 2013 and then to Halling, Kent in 2017. In July 2018, Laura Adlington married Matthew Adlington, who works as a Police Community Support Officer for Kent Police. Laura's other passion is musical theatre. She has performed in several amateur dramatic productions throughout her life.

During Laura's time in Great British Bake Off viewers of the show were particularly thrilled to see a genuine friendship blossom between Laura and Matt Lucas. In an interview before the show aired, Laura admitted: "I saw [Matt] in Les Mis last year and he was incredible. I was very star struck when I first saw him and made a bit of a fool out of myself. I think my first words to him were, "Omg I love you" ".[5] Laura's love of musicals (as a viewer and performer) saw her bond with Matt during Bread Week. She later confessed to Noel in one of their little bench chats that his Les Miserables run was the best thing she'd ever seen on the stage.
