Lawrence Goldfarb (born Lawrence Ross Goldfarb on November 21, 1958 in Queens, New York City, NY) is an American hedge fund manager and CEO and founding partner of the LRG Capital Group. He is also the co-founder and board member of AutismAid.[2] Goldfarb also owns LRG Racing, which competed in the American Federation of Motorcyclists. Additionally, he is the founder of the Lawrence Goldfarb Judicial Reform Foundation[3] and Criminal Justice Partners.

Education[edit]

Lawrence Goldfarb grew up in the New York City boroughs outside Manhattan and attended Forest Hills High School. Following high school he attended George Washington University and earned a B.A. in International Economics, and graduated in 1981.

In 1984, Lawrence Goldfarb graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law School and wrote for the Georgetown Law Journal.[4][5]

Career[edit]

Lawrence Goldfarb began his career as an attorney for Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and subsequently became an attorney with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he specialized in financings, mergers and recapitalizations. Afterwards, Goldfarb moved to San Francisco, California and joined Credit Suisse First Boston Corporation as a Partner and Director of the Mergers and Acquisitions Group.

In 1998, Lawrence Goldfarb formed BayStar Capital Management, LLC, a vehicle in which he could fund growth oriented, small capitalization, and publicly traded companies. Through Baystar, Goldfarb funded and invested in a variety of companies such as World Online and XM Satellite Radio.[6][7] Goldfarb was well known for being one of the most foremost investors and experts in equity Private investment in public equity, also known as PIPEs.[8][9]

In 2005, he founded LRG Capital Group in California where he served as CEO until July 2011 when he announced his retirement from active management of the company to focus on philanthropic activities.[10]

Goldfarb currently serves as a board member and West Coast Director of AutismAid, an organization dedicated to assisting and fundraising for other autism non-profit organizations.[11][12][13] Goldfarb also founded the Judicial Reform Foundation and Criminal Justice Partners.

Philanthropy and community involvement[edit]

Lawrence Goldfarb helped launch the Joe Toucan Diabetes Project. The project employs a Joe Toucan doll, books, and an array of other products to help fund research and education into pediatric diabetes.[14][15] Goldfarb is active in several Bay-Area charities.[16]

Lawrence Goldfarb has served as a Board Member in several charitable and non-profit foundations such as Ambassadors of Hope and Opportunity, Blue Bear School of American Music, and Youth Tennis Advantage.

He has served as the president and chairman of the board of The 142 Throckmorton Theatre. He also also served on the board for Youth Tennis Advantage,[17] Marin History Museum,[18] The Joe Toucan Diabetes Project,[19] and the Easter Seals.[20] In February 2010, he was honored by the American Diabetes Association as Father of the Year.[21]

Goldfarb's experience as the father of an autistic child has lead him to support many organizations focused on autism research and treatment including Autism Speaks, The Oak Hill School, The Star Academy and The Ryder Foundation, Marin Scope, and Comedy for Kids SF. He also continues to be a major contributor to The Lower Eastside Girls Club, US First, Room to Read, Homeward Bound of Marin, the Scleroderma Research Foundation, Blue Star Music Camps and the Drug Policy Alliance.

Goldfarb has written and contributed to publications in the finance industry such as Biotechnology Venture Capital Investments,[24] PIPEs: A Guide to Private Investments in Public Equity,[25] Business Times,[26] Alpha, by Institutional Investor,[27] and eFinancialNews.[28] He has also been a guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University. Additionally, he regularly speaks at both national and international private equity and hedge fund conferences and events, including the 4th Annual Global Absolute Returns Congress,[29] the Australian Pensions and Investment Summit,[30] the Building Billion-Dollar Companies in the Bay State Conference, and the European Global Fund Analysis Conference.[31]

In 2010, Goldfarb was awarded The American Diabetes Association's Father of the Year Award.[32]

Goldfarb has been awarded 2004 Global Fund Analyst Top Performing Fund,[33] 2003 National Leadership Award, and the 2006 Wall Street Reporter Award.

Personal life[edit]

Goldfarb has dedicated his philanthropy to autism and diabetes. Additionally, he has served on the boards of various non-profits and organizations.[34][35][36][37][38]

Music[edit]

Goldfarb is an avid jazz piano player, having performed with Bob Weir, Jerry Harrison, and Rob Wasserman, among other well-known musicians.[39][40] He was also the executive producer for The Gracious Few's self-titled album.[41]

Sports[edit]

Goldfarb owns LRG Racing, which competed in the American Federation of Motorcyclists.
