Liaquat Habib Merchant SI (Urdu:لیاقت حبیب مرچنٹ; born 12 May 1941) is a lawyer by profession who qualified in Bombay (India) and started his practice of law before the High Court of Bombay in 1964. He has practiced law in Bombay, Dubai, London and in Pakistan since 1967 to date.
Liaquat Merchant is a member of the Jinnah Family being the grandson of Jinnah’s sister Mariambai who lived in Bombay.
He is a Barrister from Gray’s Inn and has the distinction of being one of Pakistan’s reputed civil lawyers.
Merchant is the Chairman and Managing Partner at LMA [Liaquat Merchant Associates] administering the Corporate and Litigation Departments of the firm.
Early life and education
Merchant was born on 12 May 1941 in Bombay, India in the famous Jinnah Family. He spent his childhood in Bombay.
Merchant received his early education in Bombay. He received his BA and LLB (Bachelor of Law) degrees from the University of Bombay in 1961 and 1964, respectively.
Career and positions held
Merchant was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Bombay in 1964 and practiced in Bombay until 1967. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of West Pakistan (now High Court of Sindh at Karachi) in 1968 and as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1978. He was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn in 1991 and was granted a license to practice as a Barrister in England and Wales by the General Council of the Bar in 1992.
Merchant was appointed Deputy Attorney General of Pakistan and served in this capacity between 1985 and 1986 during which period he appeared in important constitutional and other cases for the Government of Pakistan. He resigned from the office of Deputy Attorney General to resume private practice of law and remains involved in major litigation as well as in important corporate/ banking/ cross-border litigation work and works in conjunction with the firms’ Litigation and Corporate Department.
He was appointed as Administrator of the Estate of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah by the High Court of Sindh at Karachi in 1980.
He was appointed as a Trustee of the [1] by the same High Court in 1984.
He is the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Jinnah Foundation a registered charitable trust which renders services to the poor, needy and deserving sections of society in the field of human development (education and health).
He is the Founder President of the Jinnah Society which was established by him to propagate the principles, ideals and vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as a nation building exercise.
Merchant has established a large number of trusts and other non-government organisations in Pakistan on which he served as a member. Education and Health are his passion and social service takes up a large part of his time. He is on the Board of several other charitable trusts and non-governmental organizations which render services in the field of education and health.

(Established by Miss Fatima Jinnah for promoting education); • Former Chairman, Board of Governors Khatoon-e-Pakistan Government Girls High School, Karachi; • Trustee of the Dawn Trust, appointed by the High Court of Sindh at Karachi; • Former Chairman, ‘Al-Mehrab Tibbi Imdad’; • Founder Director, ‘Bank AL Habib Limited’; • Former Member, ‘Pakistan Laws Review Commission’ constituted by the Government of Pakistan in 2000 and Shaukat Tarin Committee on Banking Reforms constituted by State Bank of Pakistan; • Former Member, Board of Advisors ‘Pakistan Human Development Fund’; • Former Member, Governing Body ‘Citizens Police Liaison Committee’ constituted by the Governor of Sindh; • Former Member, Board of Governors Montessori Teachers Training Institute; • Former Founder Member, ‘The Reformers’; • Former Member Board of Governors, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust/ Cancer Hospital, Pakistan; • Former Trustee, The Legend Trust;
Writings

Awards
In recognition of the services rendered by Liaquat Merchant in the field of education and health and propagation of the ideals, principles and vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah by his various publications and for establishing and managing various Jinnah related institutions involving public services, the President of Pakistan conferred Sitara-i-Imtiaz on him in the year 2008.
