Lika Bugaeva (Ukrainian: Ліка Бугайова; 22 February 1991, Svitlovodsk, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian musician, composer and songwriter. Leader of the indie rock band Zetetics. Member of the National All-Ukrainian Music Association.

Early life[edit]

Lika Bugaeva was born in Svitlovodsk.

In 2007–2012, she studied at the evening music school No. 1 named after K. G. Stetsenko at the pop department in the vocal class in Kyiv. She preferred mostly jazz compositions.

2011–2015: The Voice and Lika Bugaeva[edit]

In 2011, she became a finalist of the first season of the vocal TV show The Voice of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Holos Krainy), where, thanks to the audience's sympathy, she reached the semifinals and live broadcasts.

On June 11, 2011, she took part in the morning live broadcast of the program Breakfast on 1+1 (Ukrainian: Snidanok na 1+1) on the TV channel 1+1.

Later Lika Bugaeva founded and registered a music group called Lika Bugaeva, where she is the absolute copyright holder and author of all the songs. On July 23, 2013, Lika performed on the radio Silver Rain in Moscow. On December 17, 2013, she released the debut music video for the song You and I from the upcoming album.

In April 2014, she performed live in the music break of the program What? Where? When? (Ukrainian: Scho? De? Koli?) on the TV channel 1+1.

On May 6, 2014, the debut album Finally I See was released, which became one of the best Ukrainian albums of 2014 according to Inspired. And the band itself was included in the top 15 impressive musicians in the special TSN project Listen to Ukrainian.

On May 29, a concert was held at the GogolBARdello club, where songs from the album were played. On the same day, an online chat and an online interview were held, which Lika Bugaeva gave to the Ukrainian National News news agency.

In 2014, the band played at the festival Gogolfest and Art Picnic of Slava Frolova in Kyiv.

On August 24, 2014, on the Independence Day of Ukraine, there was a performance at the jazz concert Mushlya Jazz, organized by the Kyiv Open Air project.

On November 6, 2015, the debut music video for the song Fly Away was released, which entered the top 25 tracks of 2014 according to Cultprostir. It gained popularity due to the fact that the performance of the lyrics was also in sign language – so that the song could be heard by those who can not hear. The official Twitter of Ukraine wrote about the fact that it recommends this clip for viewing throughout the country.

In the winter of 2014, she participated in the Jazz & Lounge Festival, where Lika and her band played an acoustic program.

In May 2015, the single You Would Never Know was released ahead of the second album. On May 15, 2015, she performed at the first festival of new Ukrainian music SVOÏ in Lviv.

At the end of July 2015, Lika Bugaeva played an acoustic program in the framework of the project Prosto Radi.O in Kyiv.

On September 3, 2015, the third single from the upcoming album, titled Rainbow, was released, which also became one of the most listened to in Ukraine.

On September 7, 2015, an interview and a live performance on the M1 music TV channel in the Start-UP Show took place.

In September 2015, a few days before the presentation of the new album, the music video for the new single Dance With Me was released.

2015–present: Zetetics[edit]

On October 8, 2015, Bugaeva changed the name of her band from Lika Bugaeva to Zetetics. On the same day, the second album was released under the name Zetetic, which consists of ten English-language songs. This record was recognized as one of the best albums of 2015 in Ukraine, according to BeeHype, Comma and Cultprostir.[1]

On October 22, the album Zetetic was presented with a concert at the ATLAS club in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian News Agency and Gazeta.ua noted the high quality of the show, sound and light. The concert Zetetics–Live in Kyiv was included in the rating of the best music films of the year according to the MusicInUa portal. The album became one of the best Ukrainian albums of 2015 according to Comma.

In March 2016, she performed an acoustic set at Hromadske.tv.[2]

On May 19, 2016, a large acoustic concert of Zetetics – Unplugged took place at the Fedoriv Hub. In September of the same year, a concert film was released, which was a great success. Later that year, Zetetics’ album Unplugged was released on all music platforms.[3]

On February 22, 2017, the single Even Tonight was released ahead of the third album. A music video for the song was released later that year.[4][5]

In May 2017, Lika Bugaeva took part in the qualifying round of the Sziget Music Festival, where her band reached the final, receiving the most votes from the audience.[6]

In the spring of 2017, Bugaeva went on an acoustic European tour, where she performed in the central squares of cities, thereby telling and showing what Ukrainian music is now. They visited 6 cities, including: Budapest, Venice, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin.[7] During the tour, they managed to win the love of the European public.

On July 2, 2017, Zetetics performed for the first time at the Atlas Weekend festival in Kyiv.

On August 31, 2017, a large-scale Kyiv concert took place on the roof of the Bel Etage club, which was the final concert in a large European tour.

In the winter of 2017, they released the brand film Rooftop Live – a live concert and interviews with the band members.

In early July 2018, they performed at a charity event for the Anna Kyivska Center. The concert was held in the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral.

On July 7, 2018, Zetetics was released again at the Atlas Weekend festival in Kyiv.

In November 2018, Lika Bugaeva performed at the charity evening Tabletochki Giving Tuesday Dinner, where she managed to raise the necessary amount to buy equipment for children's hospitals.

On March 19, 2019, she presented the single Burning, which will be included in the future album.

In September 2019, she presented her third studio album 11:11, which includes nine English-language songs.[8][9][10]

On December 3, 2019, she presented a new show with a big concert at the ATLAS club in Kyiv. Lika Bugaeva wrote and performed the music for the film The Nightmare Director, or School No. 5, which was released in October 2019.

In January 2020, Zetetics presented the song Sil’, written in two versions: in Ukrainian and Russian languages.[11][12] Hromadske Radio celebrated this song by adding it to their podcast.[13]

At the same time, a large interview took place on the air of the program I Go To You (Ukrainian: Idu Na Ti) on the TV5 channel.

In 2020, Zetetics was selected to be the official diplomatic contemporary music catalog of Ukraine from the Ukrainian Institute. Thanks to this, the Ukrainian Institute will recommend the group to represent Ukraine abroad.[14] The winners were selected by an international jury – directors of leading international festivals and showcases, outstanding performers and conductors, music critics and journalists from Austria, Germany, Lithuania, The Netherlands and Poland.

In 2021, Lika Bugaeva became a member of the National All-Ukrainian Music Association.
