Life Is Strange, a video game series by Square Enix, features multiple teenage characters whose stories are changed by player choices. The player's engagement to the characters is pivotal for it. The series' playable characters are American teenagers facing forms of coming-of-age. Its characters were praised for being relatable for players.

Conception[edit]

The series features supernatural elements, with the developers giving an ability to a main character that reinforces the narrative theme.[1]

The series' DNA consists of relatable characters, social themes and supernatural elements, according Co-Creator and Writer Jean-Luc Cano in December 2019.[2] Michel Koch has described the series and the approach to its characters as an anthology series similar to TV series like True Detective or American Horror Story.[3] The players' empathy towards characters is part of the DNA according to Writer Christian Divine in September 2018.[4]

Max Caulfield is the playable protagonist of the original Life Is Strange game and appears in Before the Storm's downloadable content (DLC) episode Farewell.

Rachel Amber is a main character in Before the Storm and serves as a theme in the original game.

Reception[edit]

Rolling Stone Australia noted that even more importantly than its drama, the original game is backed by "realistic, relatable characters".[6] The Verge compared the original game to watching a television series, but more involved as the player makes choices on behalf of the characters.[7] Colin Campbell of Polygon nominated the duo Max and Chloe in the original game for best characters of the decade in November 2019, stating they are unalike but "bring the best out of each other".[8]
