Below is an incomplete list of the historical battles of the Muslim states, which are considered Holy Wars. These battles were mainly opposed by the Crusaders, Indian Raja's, Mongolian occupants and other small peoples who are not Muslims.
Jihad (Arabic for "struggle") in the Muslim world has been interpreted as a struggle for the cause of God, which must be waged by the Muslim community. Consequently, the nature of the attack is important in interpretation - if a Muslim state or community as a whole is attacked, jihad becomes compulsory for all Muslims. It was with these calls for the Muslim state that the Ottoman Empire turned out to be successful, and the most brutal and grandiose battle was the famous Third Battle of Panipat (in India).
