  1. Certain award groups do not simply award one winner. They recognize several different recipients, have runners-up and have third place. Since this is a specific recognition and is different from losing an award, runner-up mentions are considered wins in this award tally. For simplification and to avoid errors, each award in this list has been presumed to have had a prior nomination.

'96 is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language coming-of-age romantic drama film directed by cinematographer C. Premkumar in his directorial debut.[1] Produced by S. Nanthagopal of Madras Enterprises and distributed by S. S. Lalit Kumar of Seven Screen Studio, the film featured Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in leading roles and also featured a supporting cast consisting of Bagavathi Perumal, Devadarshini, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Gouri G. Kishan, Aadhitya Bhaskar and Varsha Bollamma. The film's technical crew comprised of music director Govind Vasantha, cinematographers Mahendiran Jayaraju and N. Shanmuga Sundaram, editor R. Govindaraj and production designer Vinoth Rajkumar. The film revolves around two high school sweethearts from the batch of 1996 meet at a reunion, 22 years after they parted.[2]

'96 released on 4 October 2018 and opened to highly positive reviews from critics and audiences, praising Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha's performances, Premkumar's scripting and direction, and other major technical aspects. It also became a box-office success, becoming one of the highest grossing Tamil films of 2018.[3] Prior to the film's release, the soundtrack composed by Govind Vasantha also received critical acclaim, saying it as one of the best soundtracks of the year.[4] As of April 2020, the film won 28 awards from 47 nominations.

At the 66th Filmfare Awards South, '96 was nominated at seven categories: Best Film, Best Director (C. Premkumar), Best Actor (Vijay Sethupathi), Best Actress (Trisha), Best Music Director (Govind Vasantha), Best Lyricist (Karthik Netha), Best Female Playback Singer – Tamil (Chinmayi). Excluding the first two, the film won all five awards.[5][6] At the 8th South Indian International Movie Awards, the film won the Best Film Award, and also won Best Actress (Trisha), Best Female Debut (Gouri G. Kishan) and Best Directorial Debut (C. Premkumar).[7][8] The film won five Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards, four Behindwoods Gold Medal Awards, four Edison Awards and four Norway Tamil Film Festival Awards, including a Balu Mahendra Award for C. Premkumar.
