List of artists influenced by Brandy

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Brandy's vocal stylings have had a significant impact on the music industry, most notably with Contemporary R&B, pop and gospel genres, where she is often subjectively referred to as the "Vocal Bible."[1] Very notable is the fact that Brandy has on various occasions been named as the single best or favorite female vocalist by a plethora of her colleagues ranging from music artists like Rihanna,[2] Natasha Bedingfield,[3] Tank[4] to Chris Brown[2] and Timbaland.[5]

Additionally to her often-praised vocal ability, it is also her discography, particularly the first four albums that have impacted several recording artists over time. Not only did it result in multiple tribute performances she has received by the likes of India.Arie, Kim Burrell, Sunshine Anderson, D. Woods and Elle Varner, but also her albums were instrumental to sonically shaping several other musical albums.

American neo soul singer Erykah Badu noted that her 1997 debut album, Baduizm, was partly influenced by Norwood's debut album,[6] She stated, “Brandy's first album was one of my inspirations when writting Baduizm. I looove that album [...] songs i liked were "I Wanna Be Down" and "Always on My Mind"... nice."[7] Fellow neo soul artist Jill Scott particularly praised the songs "Sunny Day" and "Always On My Mind" saying "I listen to her shit all the time".[3] Pop group Karmin's song "Brokenhearted" was inspired by Brandy's song of the same name.[8]

While her debut album "Brandy" was influential to various neo-soul singers, her third LP "Full Moon" was gravitated towards by various artists of the Gospel and contemporary R&B genre. B.Slade for example spoke of the album, commenting Full Moon single-handedly changed the vocal game. "It has been the template for vocal choices and background vocal arrangements [for years]."[9] R&B singer Melanie Fiona, especially admired the singer's work on that album referring to Norwood as the "Queen of Harmonies".[10] Neo soul singer India.Arie often cites the album, particularly the song "He Is" as being the template for a wide array of singers."[9] Canadian R&B singer Keshia Chanté credited the album for inspiring her writing for her album Night & Day, while American singer Luke James referred to Full Moon as the "bible" of 2000s contemporary R&B, calling it the "blueprint of how to do vocals."[3] Gospel and R&B singer Lil Mo stated that she listens to "Full Moon" every time before she hits the stage.[3]

You take the backing vocals of Brandy – the way they sit off the rhythm – and transpose those lines into your guitar, which in turn leads you back to Hendrix but only the era 1968 onward when his polyrhythmic phrasing really came to the fore…

John Frusciante describing how Brandy inspired his guitar work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium[11]

Barbadian singer Rihanna revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that her 2007 multi-platinum album, Good Girl Gone Bad, was primarily influenced by Afrodisiac. In the interview she stated, “Brandy's album really helped to inspire, because that album I listen to all day, all night when I was in the studio [...] I really admired that every song was a great song."[12] Rock musician John Frusciante, former guitarist of rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers, mentioned that Norwood and the album were the “main inspiration” behind the guitar work on the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s 2006 Grammy winning album, Stadium Arcadium.[13] In 2008, singer Beyoncé Knowles selected album cut "Focus" for her personal music playlist on iTunes.[14] R&B singer Nivea interpolated the song "I Tried" on her 2010 single "Love Hurts".[15] Kelly Rowland cited Norwood, who also wrote and produced for Rowland's debut album, as one of the inspirations for her second studio album Ms. Kelly (2007).[16]

Additionally, on many occasions, Norwood has been thought of as a talented muse that music producers and songwriters have used to enhance their own artistic and creative energies.[17][18] Songwriter Sean Garrett credits the vocal work on the album for his approach to writing, saying "I take a lot from what [Brandy] and Rodney did on the Full Moon album. I was extremely impressed with it and I always try to outdo that album".[9] Record producer Timbaland, claimed that out of all the vocalists he has worked with, Brandy is the best one, saying her voice makes him want to do records with her simply for the pleasure of hearing her voice in his car.[5]
