  • Soldier: 76's line "I love the smell of pulse munitions in the morning" is a reference to Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore's famous line from Apocalypse Now, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning".
  • Junkrat's line "Why so serious?" (upon killing Reaper) is a reference to the Joker's famous line from the 2008 film The Dark Knight.
  • Reaper's line "If it lives, I can kill it" is a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger's line "If it bleeds, we can kill it" in the 1987 film Predator.
  • Mei's line "You have to let it go" is a reference to the song "Let It Go" from the 2013 film Frozen.
  • Mei's line "Do you wanna build a snowman?" is a reference to the song "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" from Frozen.

  • The Heroes of my Storm poster and the Fighters of the Storm arcade game on the Hanamura map are references to Blizzard Entertainment's MOBA game Heroes of the Storm.[1][3]
  • The arcade game The Lost Vikings VI on the Hanamura map is a reference to Blizzard Entertainment's puzzle-platform game The Lost Vikings.[3]
  • A murloc, a species in Blizzard Entertainment's MMORPG game World of Warcraft, can be seen at the bottom of one of the soda dispensers in the arcade on the Hanamura map.[3]
    • A large murloc statue can also be found outside of the arcade on Hanamura. Shooting it will play a murloc sound effect from World of Warcraft.[1]
  • Outside the arcade on the Hanamura map, there is a large 16-bit version of Jim Raynor, a character from Blizzard Entertainment's military science fiction media franchise StarCraft.[3]
  • In the spawn area for the attacking team on the Temple of Anubis, Hollywood, and Ilios maps, a tablet playing Blizzard Entertainment's collectible card video game Hearthstone.[1][3]

  • Pharah's voice line "Rocket jump? That sounds dangerous" is a reference to the maneuver in the team-based online multiplayer first-person shooter video game Team Fortress 2, of which Overwatch is the "spiritual successor," being heavily inspired by it.
  • Mercy's voice line "Need a second opinion?" is a reference to the line "Would you like a second opinion? You are also ugly!" spoken by the character the Medic in Team Fortress 2.
