List of rescinded Formula One wins

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

This is a list of Formula One wins which were rescinded, either by the original race winner being disqualified or penalised. The most recent occurrence was at the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix where Lewis Hamilton was dropped from first to third after being accused by the FIA officials for corner-cutting.

In each instance, a different driver was awarded the race win under such circumstances.

Trivia[edit]

1976[edit]

In 1976, after it was ruled that James Hunt did not complete the full race, having taken an access road to fix his car, his win from the British Grand Prix was taken away, and given to Niki Lauda who at the time was recovering from his near-fatal accident at the Nürburgring.

1982[edit]

In 1982, at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the respective first and second place finishers of Brabham's Nelson Piquet and Williams' Keke Rosberg were disqualified for their cars being underweight, and this elevated Alain Prost to race victory, and two Britons of Nigel Mansell and John Watson to the podium. For the second time, likewise with Hunt, the winner was disqualified from victory in his home race.

1989[edit]

In 1989, at the Japanese Grand Prix, McLaren's drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost collided, with Prost retiring and Senna rejoining via the escape road, with Senna winning the race. However, Senna's action was deemed illegal and his win was taken away, also losing Senna the 1989 title in the process. This win went to Alessandro Nannini.

1994[edit]

In 1994, at the Belgian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher of Benetton was disqualified and stripped of victory because of excessive wear on his wooden plank. This indicated that the car's ride height was too low, hence an illegal aerodynamic advantage. This time, the win went to Damon Hill.

2008[edit]

In 2008, after it was ruled he cut a chicane to win the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was penalised 25 seconds post-race and this resulted in his win being taken away and handed to Felipe Massa. For the first time, the race winner was penalised out of victory rather than disqualified. This decision to penalise Hamilton so severely was met with anger from race fans (especially those of Hamilton), as well as Niki Lauda.
