Age of vice presidents[edit]

The median age at swearing-in of Indian vice presidents is roughly 70 years, 70 days. Mohammad Hamid Ansari is closest to this mean age. Ramaswamy Venkataraman was the longest lived vice president in Indian history, who lived to the age of 98 years and 54 days. B. D. Jatti was the second longest-lived vice president, who lived to the age of 89 years and 270 days, 8 years and 149 days short of Venkataraman. The oldest living vice president Mohammad Hamid Ansari will surpass Jatti if he lives beyond 27 December 2026, and surpass Venkataraman if he lives beyond 25 May 2035. B. D. Jatti was the youngest elected vice president, at age of 61 years and 355 days, while Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was the oldest elected vice president, at the age of 76 years and 300 days. B. D. Jatti also had the longest retirement period of any vice president, living 22 years and 280 days after leaving office, while Zakir Husain also had the shortest retirement period of 1 year and 355 days. Krishan Kant was the only vice president to ever die in office.

Only two of the vice presidents, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Mohammad Hamid Ansari were re-elected vice presidents, serving 2 terms. Zakir Husain and B. D. Jatti were younger than two of their immediate successors, on the other extreme, V. V. Giri and Mohammad Hidayatullah were older than their predecessors.

Of all the vice presidents, six immediately succeeded to the Presidency by winning the presidential election. They were Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Zakir Husain, V. V. Giri, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma and K. R. Narayanan. While, V. V. Giri also served as acting president upon death of the president. Mohammad Hidayatullah also acted a president upon death of Zakir Husain and resignation of V. V. Giri as acting president, but he was Chief Justice then.

Timeline of living vice presidents[edit]

This is a chronological list of all who served as the vice president of India and were still living, at different periods in history. There have been 2 time periods when there was only one living vice president, first with the inauguration of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in 1952 and most recently during the administration of Mohammad Hamid Ansari following the death of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in 2010.

There has been two time periods when 5 living current or former vice presidents co-existed. The earliest period was from the July 1992 inauguration of K. R. Narayanan to the September 1992 death of Mohammad Hidayatullah. The most recent and the longest period was a two-year period beginning with the August 1997 inauguration of Krishan Kant to the December 1999 death of Shankar Dayal Sharma. If one includes future vice presidents as well as past and current vice presidents, there has been only one time period when all 14 different vice presidents co-existed. (see Statistics)
