Age of vice presidents[edit]
The median age at swearing-in of Indian vice presidents is roughly 70 years, 70 days. Mohammad Hamid Ansari is closest to this mean age. Ramaswamy Venkataraman was the longest lived vice president in Indian history, who lived to the age of 98 years and 54 days. B. D. Jatti was the second longest-lived vice president, who lived to the age of 89 years and 270 days, 8 years and 149 days short of Venkataraman. The oldest living vice president Mohammad Hamid Ansari will surpass Jatti if he lives beyond 27 December 2026, and surpass Venkataraman if he lives beyond 25 May 2035. B. D. Jatti was the youngest elected vice president, at age of 61 years and 355 days, while Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was the oldest elected vice president, at the age of 76 years and 300 days. B. D. Jatti also had the longest retirement period of any vice president, living 22 years and 280 days after leaving office, while Zakir Husain also had the shortest retirement period of 1 year and 355 days. Krishan Kant was the only vice president to ever die in office.
Only two of the vice presidents, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Mohammad Hamid Ansari were re-elected vice presidents, serving 2 terms. Zakir Husain and B. D. Jatti were younger than two of their immediate successors, on the other extreme, V. V. Giri and Mohammad Hidayatullah were older than their predecessors.
Of all the vice presidents, six immediately succeeded to the Presidency by winning the presidential election. They were Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Zakir Husain, V. V. Giri, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma and K. R. Narayanan. While, V. V. Giri also served as acting president upon death of the president. Mohammad Hidayatullah also acted a president upon death of Zakir Husain and resignation of V. V. Giri as acting president, but he was Chief Justice then.

There has been two time periods when 5 living current or former vice presidents co-existed. The earliest period was from the July 1992 inauguration of K. R. Narayanan to the September 1992 death of Mohammad Hidayatullah. The most recent and the longest period was a two-year period beginning with the August 1997 inauguration of Krishan Kant to the December 1999 death of Shankar Dayal Sharma. Statistics[edit]
- There have been two men who have been the only living vice president: Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (as the first, from 13 May 1952 to 13 May 1962), and Mohammad Hamid Ansari (from Shekhawat's death on 15 May 2010 to 11 August 2017).
- During two periods in the History of India, has there been 5 persons alive to have been vice president. The first such period was from 25 July 1992 to 18 September 1992 (when B. D. Jatti, Mohammad Hidayatullah, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, and K. R. Narayanan were alive). The second and most recent period was from 21 August 1997 to 26 December 1999 (when B. D. Jatti, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, K. R. Narayanan, and Krishan Kant were alive). The longest period where there have been 5 living vice presidents was 2 years and 127 days, ending with the death of Shankar Dayal Sharma in December 1999.
- There have been 6 administrations during which a vice president has not died, the most recent being the administration of Venkaiah Naidu. This does not include the administration of the incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar, as no vice president has died since Bhairon Singh Shekhawat who died during Mohammad Hamid Ansari's administration.
- Conversely, during the administrations of Mohammad Hidayatullah, Krishan Kant, and Mohammad Hamid Ansari has there been as many as two deaths during an administration (Kant in addition died in office in 2002).
- Because he was the first vice president in addition to being the equal longest serving vice president, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of a vice president during his term (10 years and 0 days).
- The longest period between deaths of vice presidents was the 9 years and 349 days between the deaths of V. V. Giri on 4 October 1982 and Mohammad Hidayatullah on 18 September 1992. The shortest was the 50 days between the deaths of B. D. Jatti on 7 June 2002 and Krishan Kant on 27 July 2002.
- There has been no death of a vice president since Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on 15 May 2010 a record 14 years, 191 days ago (exceeding the previous record of 9 years and 349 days on 29 April 2020).
- The second longest period is the 9 years and 290 days between the deaths of Mohammad Hidayatullah on 18 September 1992 and B. D. Jatti on 7 June 2002.
- Following his administrations' end in 1979, B. D. Jatti lived to see a record 5 administrations prior to his death in June 2002. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Ramaswamy Venkataraman follow with 4 administrations after their own administrations ended in 1962 and 1987 respectively, prior to their deaths in April 1975 and January 2009 respectively.
- If one includes future as well as past and current vice presidents, the record sits at 14:
- Between Jagdeep Dhankhar's birth on 18 May 1951 and Zakir Husain's death on 3 May 1969, the following presidents were alive: Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Zakir Husain, V. V. Giri, Gopal Swarup Pathak, B. D Jatti, Mohammad Hidayatullah, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, Shankar Dayal Sharma, K. R. Narayanan, Krishan Kant, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Venkaiah Naidu, and Jagdeep Dhankhar.
- Since the inauguration of Venkaiah Naidu on 11 August 2017 (a period of 7 years, 103 days), there have been at least two vice presidents living.
Oldest living vice presidents of India[edit]
Not all vice presidents live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 11 deceased vice presidents, 6 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 5 did not. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the oldest living vice president when he was inaugurated in 1952 and remained so until his death in 1975, for a record 22 years and 339 days. Gopal Swarup Pathak became the oldest living vice president when V. V. Giri died in 1980, but he survived Giri by only 2 years and 103 days.
Gopal Swarup Pathak was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 84 years, and 118 days. B. D Jatti, who was 89 years and 270 days when he died was the oldest vice president to die without ever acquiring this distinction. K. R. Narayanan, who was 85 years, and 13 days old when he died on 9 November 2005 is most recent vice president to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
