Also, the following media appearances have been added many references to the secondary sources:

Throughout 2023, Bojic has been publicly speaking about human autonomy in the age of AI[2], should humans allowed to make mistakes or their future should be determined by the algorithms and asking if we are creating future for humans of machines[3]. He has also commented on number of related issues for various media outlets, such as the reasons why Serbia leads regionally for most Meta user data requests[4], how AI will transform education[5], the state of the digital economy in Serbia[6], deepfakes[7], is it ethical to bring the dead back to life with AI[8], the need for a dedicated agency to oversee artificial intelligence[9] and so on.

On the Croatian TV show, Edge of Science, Ljubisa Bojic presents his idea of a 'Cultural Organism' and its connections to artificial general intelligence (AGI)[10]. The conversation explores the power of technology to transcend widespread propaganda, directly impact individuals, and considers if future societal governance will be led by humans or dictated by algorithms.

Ljubisa Bojic (born 1983) is an Serbian communication scientist and futurologist and a senior research fellow[11] in the Digital Society Lab,[12] Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory[13] at the University of Belgrade, Institute for AI R&D of Serbia[14], Department of communication at the University of Vienna[15] and visiting fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences Vienna (IWM)[16]. He is the author of Metaverse through the prism of power and addiction: what will happen when the virtual world becomes more attractive than reality? (2022)[17] and Culture Organism or Techno-Feudalism: How Growing Addictions and Artificial Intelligence Shape Contemporary Society (2022).[18] Bojic was appointed to the Foresight Expert Panel of UNEP[19]. His scientific publications examine addictions, nature of media, impact of emerging technologies, happiness and power in global society.

Ljubisa Bojic is advocate of recommender systems as a public good. He initiated the Belgrade Digital Freedom Pledge at the EMERGE 2022 Conference in Belgrade on 18 December 2022, which was signed by domestic and international actors from academia, the NGO sector, and beyond.[20] Bojic initially coined this idea in his research paper on the metaverse.[21] Bojic's argument is that AI-based recommender systems should be transparent and provide balanced content, with less emotion-arousing ideas, instead of simply confirming someone's opinion.[22] He believes that both big tech companies and AI have too much power over what people are exposed to on an individual level.[23] Bojic has even declared AI-driven recommender systems as the greatest global social force at this moment and has called for their regulation.[24] He has outlined two possible futures for humanity:[25] one in which AI-driven technologies create extra spare time, allowing people to become more creative, contemplate, and have deep social connections. The other, more likely future, is one in which most of us become dull addicts to superficial pleasures and new media, such as the metaverse, a situation in which people become something like plants nurtured by AI. The initiative to declare recommendation systems a public good has received media attention[26][27][28][29][30][31]. Additionally, Bojic has been giving talks explaining and extending the concept to large language models and artificial general intelligence (AGI)[32][33][34].

Throughout 2023, Bojic has been publically speaking about human autonomy in the age of AI[35][36][37][38], should humans allowed to make mistakes or their future should be determined by the algorithms and asking if we are creating future for humans of machines[39][40][41][42][43][44][45]. He has also commented on number of related issues for various media outlets, such as the reasons why Serbia leads regionally for most Meta user data requests[46], how AI will transform education[47][48], the state of the digital economy in Serbia[49], deepfakes[50], is it ethical to bring the dead back to life with AI[51], the need for a dedicated agency to oversee artificial intelligence[52] and so on.

On the Croatian TV show, Edge of Science, Ljubisa Bojic presents his idea of a 'Cultural Organism' and its connections to artificial general intelligence (AGI)[53][54]. The conversation explores the power of technology to transcend widespread propaganda, directly impact individuals, and considers if future societal governance will be led by humans or dictated by algorithms.

Ljubisa Bojic was appointed a member of a committee on ethics in AI formed by the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Development.[55] As reported by Radio Free Europe, Bojic's contribution to the Ethical Guidelines on AI was to introduce recommender systems used by big online platforms as high-risk AI systems for the first time.[56] Related to that, the following text is part of the Guidelines on Ethical Development and Deployment of AI in the Republic of Serbia:[57]

AI-driven recommendation systems also belong to the list of high-risk systems on platforms used by a large number of people, such as social networking sites. Based on digital footprints and defined goals, they make decisions about which content is presented to an individual or a group, which can affect attention, desires, opinions, creativity, imagination, feelings, decisions, and activities. At the level of society, recommender systems can contribute to the creation of echo chambers, i.e., polarization around important social issues, and in the final instance, they can affect the democratic capacity.

Views on the Metaverse[edit]

In one of his recent publications[21], Bojic delves into the potential impact of the metaverse on society's power relations, particularly concerning Big Tech. Drawing upon classical theorists, he suggests that the concentration of power in Big Tech companies may continue to grow if the metaverse becomes mainstream. Bojic asserts that the metaverse's technological advancements could create a seductive environment, simulating direct reality and contributing to an increase in media addiction within society. This publication has received interest of public[58][59][60] and it was subject of Bojic's public lecture[61]

Early life[edit]

Ljubisa Bojic was born and raised in Kragujevac, Serbia, as only child of Slavica and Milorad Bojic. His father was a professor of thermodynamics at Faculty of Engineering,[62] University of Kragujevac and member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU).[63] Ljubisa Bojic graduated from an international Delia School of Canada in Hong Kong in 2002.[64]
