"Love Money Party" is a song by American recording artist Miley Cyrus featuring Big Sean for her fourth studio album Bangerz (2013). It was written and produced by Mike Will Made It, with additional songwriting provided by Big Sean, Middlebrooks, Garrett and Cyrus. "Love Money Party" draws inspiration from trap and hip hop music; it describes the lack of importance that the titular concepts of love, money, and partying have at face value, although acknowledges Cyrus' interest in attaining them.

"Love Money Party" received generally mixed reviews from contemporary music critics, who felt that its production was generic. The track additionally garnered negative comparisons to the musical catalog of Barbadian recording artist Rihanna. It has not been released as an official single from Bangerz, and has consequently failed to impact any national record charts. Cyrus has performed the song during her ongoing Bangerz Tour; the segment was commended as a highlight from the concert.

Background and composition[edit]

Big Sean is featured on "Love Money Party".

In 2012, Cyrus announced plans to focus on her film career, effectively putting her musical endeavors on hiatus. That year, she appeared in the films LOL and So Undercover. She was also confirmed as a primary voice actress in the feature film Hotel Transylvania, but dropped out of the project to coordinate a musical comeback.[1] In January 2013, Cyrus ended her recording contract with Hollywood Records, under which she released the albums Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus (2007), Breakout (2008), Can't Be Tamed (2010), and EP The Time of Our Lives (2009). Later that month, she signed a recording contract with RCA Records.[2] In March, she confirmed that her fourth studio album would be released by the end of 2013.[3] The final product, Bangerz, was released in October 2013 and debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 270,000 copies.[4]

"Love Money Party" was written and produced by Mike Will Made It, with additional songwriting provided by Big Sean, Middlebrooks, Garrett and Cyrus. Stephen Hybicki, Tim Roberts, and Rob Kinelski recorded the song, which was later mixed by Jacyen Joshua with assistance from Maximilian Jaegar. Chris "TEK" O'Bryan oversaw the engineering of the track.[5] Mike Will Made It commented that Cyrus and American rapper Future had become close companions during the production of Bangerz; he alleged that Future wrote the chorus for "Love Money Party" after he and Cyrus recorded another track "My Darlin'" for the record,[6] although he is not given songwriting credits in its liner notes.[5] It was first announced that Big Sean would appear on Bangerz when its track listing was confirmed on September 10. Their collaboration appears as the seventh of thirteen tracks on the standard version of the record.[7] It marks their second joint project of 2013; earlier that month, Cyrus appeared in the music video for his track "Fire".[8]

Mikael Wood from Los Angeles Times commented that Cyrus "casts a skeptical eye" on the wealth and success from her childhood,[9] while Christina Drill from Popdust elaborated that Cyrus notes that "love is nothing but love, money is nothing but money, and a party is nothing but a party."[10] However, she repeatedly chants "love, money, party" during the chorus, which ends with her stating "we want love, money, party."[11] Drawing inspiration from hip hop music, "Love Money Party" is one of several instances where Cyrus is heard rapping on Bangerz.[10] The song is also notable for its incorporation of trap music elements.[12] The song was played during the Bangerz album release party on October 9, 2013, along with several additional tracks from the record.[13]

Critical reception[edit]

"Love Money Party" received generally mixed reviews from contemporary music critics. In a favorable review, Nick Catucci from Entertainment Weekly described the track as a tribute to "shameless frat-party-starting" and commented that Big Sean's verse came across like a "tribute to red Solo cups".[14] Heather Phares from AllMusic, however, expressed concern that the song sounded "even more like a Rihanna-be" than Cyrus' lead single "We Can't Stop".[15] Mikael Wood from Los Angeles Times shared a similar sentiment in regards to its generic production, and was skeptical of its "hollowed-out beat".[9] Writing for The Guardian, Kitty Empire criticized Cyrus' rapping abilities, which she opined was a "series of non-sequitur buzzwords, gibberish loosely connected by a bit of production". She elaborated that it exemplified a "desire to wind people up for commercial, rather than transgressive, ends", which she felt was a recurring problem throughout Bangerz.[16]

Writing for The Daily Beast, Amy Zimmerman applauded Cyrus for "[showcasing her] more philosophical side", but nonetheless suggested that "those thoughts are fairly ridiculous".[17] Christina Drill from Popdust directed her criticism towards Big Sean, whom she felt provided a "wimpy verse" that disappointed by comparison to his earlier appearance on "All Me" by Drake.[10] Tom Sharkey from Highbrow Hip Hop stated that Cyrus' rapping was "not awful" and added that Big Sean's verse was "nothing really special". He suggested that the song itself and Cyrus' provocative behavior were highly similar to the music and sexual public image of Rihanna; he labeled the track as a sub-par version of "Pour It Up" by Rihanna, and opined that Cyrus' transitioning persona was poorly done.[18] Evan Sawdey from PopMatters called "Love Money Party" the worst track from Bangerz, and opined that it "borders on atonal".[19] Kyle Fowle from Slant Magazine criticized the track for being "tedious and cliché" while simultaneously presenting "genre-hopping without any clear focus".[20] A writer from The Honesty Hour classified the track as one of Cyrus' "more interesting collaborations"; while they felt that its lyrics were engaging, they expressed disappointment in the "forced" elements of hip hop music.[12]

Live performances[edit]

Cyrus has performed "Love Money Party" without Big Sean on her headlining Bangerz Tour; it was the third song performed during the first showing in Vancouver on February 14, 2014. The track followed Cyrus' entrance with "SMS (Bangerz)" and "4x4", after which she momentarily paused for a wardrobe change into a green marijuana-inspired leotard. For a portion of the song, she appeared on a golden sport utility vehicle (SUV); while sitting on it, she briefly simulated masturbation and spread her legs in a suggestive manner. In the absence of Big Sean himself, a large puppet of his likeness appeared to perform his verse. Towards the end of the performance, Cyrus threw money into the audience. Mike Wass from Idolator commented favorably that "it's worth the price of admission for that segment alone."[21] Lindsay Zoladz from Pitchfork Media raved that the performance was "one of the most joyous things I have had the pleasure of witnessing in 2014".[22] Blake Hannon provided a positive review, writing that he loved "the hip-hop bounce of Love Money Party."[23] Cyrus returned to perform the song during the musical festival on June 21, 2014, Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium of London, in front of 80,000 people.[24]
