A loved boy is defined as a boy in the pre-teen (10-14 years) or adolescent (15-19 years) stage who has a desire to have a close and intimate homosexual relationship with an older man, which may or may not include an active sexual attraction to that older man.[1]

In May 1999, an online survey was conducted with 46 loved boys about their childhood and background. One of the questions asked was, "At what age do you remember discovering that you were emotionally and sexually attracted to other boys and/or men?" Responses indicated that 33% recognised their attraction at age 10, 59% at age 12 and 87% at age 14.[2]
