"A Master Musician, LUIE LUIE will make you come -- and glad you came. A Superb Showman, he will caress you. He will force your feet to fidget and seduce your silent hands. His beat will bow your head.... This tall Music Matador oozes his music from ten fingers, two feet, two knees, his mouth, and a thousand brains, and in this all inclusive posture combination of mind and body and muscle and spirit, overwhelms the strong, the meek, regardless of age, sex or religious relationships.

Musical Career[edit]

Johnston is a multi-instrumentalist who wrote and played all of his own music, often in bars and clubs as a live act.[2][3] The majority of Johnston's musical career was performed in complete obscurity, but his LP "Touchy" would later be rediscovered and officially re-issued by Companion Records in 2008[3] and by Toxic Toast Records in 2019.[6] The tracks, El Touchy and Touch of Light, were also featured in volumes 1 and 2 of Songs in the Key of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music which highlights musical acts by various outsider musicians compiled by producer and author Irwin Chusid.[7][8][9] Following this resurgence in popularity, Johnston release a single titled Don'tcha Take Christmas Away From Us in 2012 and two full length albums titled The Empty Tomb and Jesus Breaks the Chains in 2015.[10] More recently, Johnston continues his work as a painter, screenwriter, and nightclub entertainer.[1]

Musical Style[edit]

Contemporary re-evaluations of Johnston's musical style have described it as "Mariachi-infused lounge-bar easy-listening"[3] and "cumbia-meets-lounging mariachi band."[1]

Within his recordings, including Touchy, Johnston plays a multitude of instruments including trumpet, improvised percussion equipment (bottles, pans, pipes, kitchen utensils), Moog synthesizers, harp, guitar, bells, shakers, and drums through the use of multi track recording. On Touchy, Johnston also opens every track with a spoken word segment explaining the meaning of the song in relation to his original dance concept entitled "The Touchy."[11][1]

Film[edit]

Johnston starred in and wrote the Joe Cranston directed film, The Big Turnaround (1988), under the name "Luis Latino" alongside son of the director, Bryan Cranston.[12][13]

In 2018, Johnston played a minor role in the film Cine Loteria (Dir. Eduardo Luis Arguelles).[13][14]
