Luko is a French startup company that distributes insurance products. Founded on 6 December 2016 by Raphaël Vullierme and Benoît Bourdel, it is registered with ORIAS.[1].
History
In December 2016, the company Luko was founded in Paris. Initially specialised in connected sensors, it offered protection products to insurers[2].
In May 2018, the company launched home insurance. It raised two million euros from Xavier Niel (Kima Ventures) and Bruno Rousset (April). Further fundraising of €20 million[3] and €50 million[4] followed in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
In July 2019, the company became the first European insurance company to be labeled a B Corp, a for-profit company serving the public interest[5].
In 2021, the company claimed to have 150,000 policyholders[6] and launched in Spain in May 2021[7].
How it works
Luko is remunerated by deducting a management fee of 30% of policyholders' contributions. The remaining 70% is divided among all policyholders who have subscribed to the same offer and is used to reimburse claims[8][9]. Unused contributions at the end of the year are given back to partner associations chosen by the policyholders[10].
Luko works in particular with Swiss Re and Munich Re.
Since January 2020, Luko is a partner of hemea (ex-Travauxlib)[11].
Since April 2021, Luko is a partner of Airbnb[12].
Products
Luko sells home insurance[13], electric vehicle insurance[14], a landlord insurance[15], comprehensive building insurance[16] and loan insurance[17].
The company offers the installation of connected sensors[18][19] and a home video-consulting service[20]. In January 2021 it launched a virtual property search assistant[21]
Competitors
Luko is often compared with US start-up Lemonade[22].
Within Europe, Luko's competitors are the historical insurance groups, such as Axa and Allianz, as well as insurance start-ups, such as Getsafe or Hedvig.
