Madhuvanti Pal (born 23 March 1992;.[1] formerly Madhuvanti Murali Mohan[1]), is an Indian classical rudra veena player and builder.[2] an exponent of the Bishnupur Gharana. She was born in Kolkata in 1992 to a family of fourth generation teachers.[1] Pal is a senior disciple of Vidushi Mita Nag of the Bishnupur Gharana, and one of the few female instrumentalists performing dhrupad at a high level in India[3]
Training and career
Pal began her training as a vocalist, before transitioning to instrumental music—first the violin,[4] giving public performances through 2015,[5] and then bansuri before taking up rudra veena. She began her study of dhrupad in the dagarbani style under Pandit Bala Chandar in 2010.[6] Since 2012, Pal has been studying and working under Vidushi Mita Nag, daughter of Padma Shri Pandit Manilal Nag,[7] and regularly performs in dhrupad festivals and concerts throughout India.[8]
Pal constructed her own rudra veena under the guidance of Pandit Rajeshekar Vyas after finding a more traditionally sized veena inadequate for her needs.[6][9] Pal currently plays a veena made under her supervision by Sanat Haldar,[10] whose uncle Tarapada Haldar founded the Dadpur string instrument manufacturing industry.[11]
From 2016 until November 2020, Pal studied and worked at the UNESCO-accredited[12][13] Bhopal Dhrupad Sansthan gurukul,[14] where she taught as a "Professional instrumentalist with deep understanding of many musical instruments and forms."[15] Following the public disclosure of sexual harassment and abuse by senior teachers and Sansthan leaders Ramakant and Akhilesh Gundecha,[13] Pal ended her association with the Sansthan.[16] Since leaving, she has spoken about the difficulty of reconciling the importance of what she was taught about music by the Gundecha Brothers with these revelations of abuse.[17]
