The Madyon are an Italian music band, formed in Cuneo in 2012.[1]
Band History
Early years (2012-2013)
The group was born in Cuneo in 2012 from an idea of Cristian Barra. The first to join the group were two historical friends of Cristian: Andrea Olivieri as multi-instrumentalist and Paolo Bergese in the role of sound engineer. Cristian's desire, who wanted to form a band, led him to contact Marco Savatteri (percussion, glockenspiel) and Matteo Conte (guitar, piano) asking them to collaborate with the group.
Madyon's musical activity began in 2012 when the group began posting cover videos on YouTube, recorded in the audio and video recording studio set up by Cristian Barra.[2]
Thanks to the use of social media, the group began to collect views on YouTube and managed to get noticed by the organizers of the main Italian music festivals. On July 7, 2013, the band made their live debut on the main stage of Collisioni Festival along with Boomdabash, Perturbazione, Marta Sui Tubi, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti and Fabri Fibra.[3] [4]
Given the need to consolidate an official lineup, Cristian started looking around for a guitarist and a drummer to complete the band. After a short time, he was contacted by guitarist Paolo Papini and drummer Fabrizio Casciola, both of whom became aware of the opportunity through mutual friends and were interested in joining the band.
In the months of July and August 2013, after some meetings in the band's studio, a strong synergy was born between the boys that gave birth to the first official Madyon line-up composed by Cristian Barra (vocals, guitar), Andrea Olivieri (bass), Paolo Papini (guitar, piano) and Fabrizio Casciola (drums). The sound engineer Paolo Bergese was recognized for being the fifth member of the formation.
Miracle EP (2014)
Beginning in September 2013, Madyon focused their efforts on making their debut EP, written by Cristian Barra and produced by the entire band. The group decided to work on the mastering stages with Christian Wright at Abbey Road Studios in London. This choice stemmed from the group's major musical influences, represented by Coldplay, Mumford & Sons and Radiohead, all bands with which Christian Wright had collaborated. Madyon released Miracle, their debut EP, on September 6, 2014, preceded by the single Come Home for which the band's first official video was made. The second single from the EP was Real Life, made with the collaboration of DJs and producers Gabriele Giudici and Sergio D’Angelo.[5]
Roll The Shadows EP (2015-2017)
Madyon returned to the recording studios in January 2015, to begin work on their second EP, written by Cristian Barra and produced by the entire band. Alternating recording sessions of original material to making covers for the YouTube channel, the band returned to Abbey Road Studios in London in late 2015 to work again on the final stages of the album together with Christian Wright. During the band's stay in London, the terrorist attacks in Paris took place on 13 November 2015. These events caused restrictive measures that drastically conditioned the stay of the boys in the capital of United Kingdom. Following that experience, once back in Italy, Cristian Barra wrote Your Love Is Not Enough, a single that was recorded by the band in a few weeks and released on 12 December 2015. The official video of the song was shot in Paris, at the foot of the Tour Eiffel, as a tribute to the city hit by the attacks.[6]
The release of the new EP was scheduled for April 15, 2016.
In January 2016, close to the promotional tour that would follow the publication of the new EP, Andrea Olivieri and Fabrizio Casciola had to leave the band due to incompatibility with their family and work commitments. Michele Cera took over the drums, since [a] long time [he was] in close friendship with all the members of the band. The bassist role remained vacant.
On the night of March 6, 2016, after returning from a trip with three musician friends, following a tragic car accident on the A21 motorway, the guitarist of the band Paolo Papini died. The news paralyzed the entire province of Cuneo, led to the cancellation of the album's publication and the immediate dissolution of Madyon.[7] [8]
In the following months, the line-up was rebuilt with the aim of releasing the EP and completing the planned tour dates. Together with Cristian Barra and Michele Cera, the sound engineer of the band Paolo Bergese decided to take a step forward by proposing himself for the role of bassist. In place of him, Paolo Canu, sound engineer, who had already been the studio assistant of the band for months alongside Paolo Bergese, took over in the role of sound engineer. During the tour dates the parts of guitar were entrusted to Fabrizio Veglia and Francesco Romano, two friends and colleagues of the late guitarist Paolo Papini.[9]
On May 20, 2016, Roll The Shadows was released, Madyon's second EP, preceded by the single Invisible. The album debuted at the 9th position in the ranking of best-selling records in Italy on iTunes.[10] [11] [12]
On August 3, 2016, in Cuneo, the Roll The Shadows Tour consisting of 20 dates began. The tour led Madyon to perform in major locations in the north Italy[13] and in some cities of France and UK such as Nice, London, Bristol and Glastonbury. After the closing of the Roll The Shadows Tour, the band withdrew from the scene but still felt the need to consolidate the figure of a new guitarist by inserting Giorgio Prandino, historical pupil of the late Paolo Papini, into the official line-up.
In the following months, Cristian Barra was involved on several occasions by his friend dj and producer Gabriele Giudici who asked him to write and interpret some vocal lines for his projects for the club scene. From this collaboration, the songs Never Let You Down and All My Life were born, proposed in the dj sets of artists such as Don Diablo, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Afrojack and both named DemoDay Track Of The Week in the Don Diablo podcast.[14]
Staring At The Sun (2018-present)
Two years after the last release, on 5 September 2018 Madyon released the single Staring At The Sun.[15]
The pre-production of the song, written by Cristian Barra during Madyon's Roll The Shadows Tour, and the new sounds of the band were structured together with Alberto Schettino in the Fuseroom Recording Studio in Berlin. For the mastering phases the band moved back to Abbey Road Studios in London, this time working together with a team composed of Christian Wright, Geoff Pesche and Gabriele Giudici, the latter becoming an official member of the band with the role of manager mastering.[16]
On October 18, 2018, Madyon released the official Staring At The Sun video, inaugurating the band's VEVO channel.
On November 16, 2018, the band released the song I Miss You, considered as a b-side of Staring At The Sun.[17]
One year later, the single Blood was released on November 15, 2019, a song written by Cristian Barra at the end of 2017, following the death of his father Emilio Barra on November 15, 2017. The official video of Blood is released on father's birthday, March 6 2020.
During the year, Madyon were contacted by the company Kunos Simulazioni who asked to be able to use two songs from the band for the PlayStation version of the video game Assetto Corsa Competizione they are developers of. The song Staring At The Sun was then used for the promotional video of Assetto Corsa Competizione, while for the PS4 theme the video game contains the instrumental version of the unreleased song Runaway [18] [19] [20][21][22]. Since June 2020, along with the release of the video game for PlayStation, this news places Madyon on the major newspapers[23][24] of the Italian national press such as Billboard [25], La Stampa [26] e All Music Italy[27]
Style and influences
Madyon, during their career, have embraced different atmospheres of the brit pop movement (genre born around the nineties), mixing them with influences of alternative rock. Experimentation and the search for new sounds always find the right balance with the classic styles of rock music. In all the band's works, from the covers on YouTube to the original releases, the sound that most characterizes the sounds of Madyon is that of the guitar, the main instrument with which the songs written by Cristian Barra are born.
On several occasions, Cristian Barra has stated that the bands that have influenced Madyon's musical style are Coldplay, Oasis, The Verve, Mumford & Sons and Radiohead.
Line-Up
The current line-up is composed of Cristian Barra (vocals and guitar), Paolo Bergese (bass, synthesizer), Giorgio Prandino (guitar) and Michele Cera (drums, percussion, piano).[28]
