MagnetX is a board game marketed by PsyX Games. Players place magnetic stones of various sizes and shapes on a square game board designed for maximum interaction.

MagnetX is played with 20 stones; each set of stones is unique to the game. The stones range in size from 3/8" to 3/4", and are polished, black stones with varying magnetic strengths. The stones are placed on a translucent acrylic board. Each stone is placed flat, or, to increase difficulty, on its edge, such that no stone touches another. Stones may extend over the edge, or balance precariously in the middle of a group, as long as no stone falls or touches another.

The Stone Pile is the set of stones not currently in play. The Pile is passed from player to player. A player's turn begins when they receive the Pile and ends when they pass it to the next player. At any time during their turn, if stones come into contact with each other, the player loses their turn, or the game, depending on whether the basic or advanced rules are used.

Board Collapse: Causing stones to come into contact with each other or to fall off the board. Foul Stones: Stones that have fallen off the board or are touching each other.

Basic Play: Each player places one stone in turn until a player causes a board collapse. In a two-player game, the collapsing player loses. In a game with three or more players, the collapsing player is eliminated; the next player removes the foul stones and returns them to the Pile. The game continues with the remaining stones in play.

Advanced Play: In this version, each player starts with 20 points. Whenever a player causes a board collapse, they retrieve all foul stones and count them. This count is subtracted from their 20 points. When a player's score reaches zero, they are eliminated. The last player with points remaining wins. A player's placed stone only counts against their score if it touches another stone already on the board.

Strategy

Generally, larger stones have a stronger magnetic field than smaller ones. When the board is empty, players can strategically place large stones on their edge anywhere. As the game progresses, players must anticipate their opponents' next moves when placing their own stones, ensuring they leave room for their own and opposing stones. In the late game, players can place stones precariously on the edge of the board, where a slight disturbance could cause them to fall. If an opponent only causes one foul stone, carefully return that one stone to its original position and force the opponent to make the more difficult next move.

The game was invented by Alfred Wenzl in 2005. It was brought to market with the help of Bruce Smith, who founded PsyX Games, and is currently in production. Both Al and Bruce share a passion for games and now work at PsyX Games, producing a wide variety of games.
