Mahfuzul Alam (Bengali: মাহফূজুল আলম) was a Bengali faith-based vocals-only singer and sound designer who had emerged as one of the biggest faces in the Bangladeshi nasheed industry by the late 2010s. He was best known as one of the senior members of the award-winning Kalarab cultural organisation, an ensemble of over 5000 young Bangladeshi nasheed artists which has also been recipients of the President of Bangladesh Award.[1] As the Lead Sound Designer of Holy Tune studios, he had composed, mixed and mastered over 400 songs and sung around 200 songs. Alam has released over 20 singles and over 40 chorus nasheeds.

Early life and education[edit]

Alam was born on 11 January 1998 to a Bengali Muslim family in Algi Khochpara, Madhabdi, Narsingdi, Bangladesh. His father was Abdul Wadud Molla, a madrasa teacher by profession. Alam was the third of four sons.

After winning a nasheed competition in 2010, Alam joined Ainuddin al-Azad's Kalarab Shilpigosthi whilst simultaneously continuing with his studies. A song of his was released on the popular Anubhabe Tumi album. The first few nasheeds that he released with them include Mayer Kotha, Tomar Bondhu Upor Tolay Basha and Shoyone Shopone Ma.[2] He completed his Kamil degree from Nayatola IUN Model Kamil Madrasa in Dhaka.

He enrolled at the National University of Bangladesh where he graduated with honours in Islamic Studies. He completed his Masters degree from Kabi Nazrul College. His favourite dish was Hyderabadi biryani.

Career[edit]

Becoming a senior member of Kalarab, he emerged as one of the country's biggest faces in the nasheed industry through record-breaking nasheeds such as Trivuboner Priyo Muhammad, Hridoy Majhe Mala Ganthi, Ami Chai Na Bachte, Nobi More Poroshmoni, Nate Rasul and Zikir. In early 2021, Alam released Priyo Baba via Holy Tune, which was a nasheed dedicated to his late father.[3]

Alam released a cover of Venge Porona Evabe, an emotional song about death, on 1 July 2021.[4] On 10 July, Holy Tune released Klanto Hridoy, what was to become Mahfuzul Alam's last nasheed.[5] He was interviewed by the Jugantor newspaper not long after.[2]

On 16 July 2021, he was shooting the Kalarab nasheed video Dao Qurbani (released for Eid al-Adha) in Pubail where he became unwell. Two days later, he was admitted to the Dewan Hospital in Madhabdi where his illness was identified as dengue fever.[6][7] Whilst being transferred to a hospital in Dhaka, he died within 15 minutes at around 8:30am in the US Bangla Hospital in Barpa, Narayanganj District. His janaza was performed after Asr prayer at his ancestral village of Algi Khochpara in Narsingdi, and he was then buried next to his father.[8]
