Maktoob Media is an Indian news and opinion website published by Maktoob Media Pvt. Ltd.[1] It was founded in 2015 by editors Aslah Kayyalakkath [2] [3] and Naseel Voici. Maktoob publishes news and features in both English and Malayalam languages.[4]

Background

Maktoob Media pioneered upon the efforts of two college students of Farook College, Calicut. Maktoob's beginnings were from the ideas of finding new platforms for raising their voice in the world of journalism, which is very fast growing today. Facebook page was the very first platform in the first year. Maktoob, through its social media platforms, was capable of drawing large readers to such an initiative which stood out from the existing news media.[5]

Focus Areas

Maktoob's coverage principally focuses on the topics of politics, minority issues, casteism in India, campus news, environment and entertainment. Maktoob Media carried the issues of Rohith Vemula's institutional murder, Disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, JNU student protests, the student strikes of Pune Film Institute, gender discrimination at SRFTI Kolkata etc., not as merely student protests but as strong questions against human rights violation and the matters of social discrimination. The news on these issues was also interpreted on how the mainstream political parties and intellectuals sensed it both positively and critically. Maktoob stood different from other media by collecting news directly and accurately from the students of the respective colleges. The world-famous personalities in the field of academics like Noam Chomsky, Talal Asad etc. directly complimented Maktoob Media.[6] Amnesty International also made remarks for bringing light to the issues of Human Rights violations.

Controversies

An exclusive video posted by Maktoob Media shows that the police broke the door of the PG reading room of the Jamia Millia Islamia library and started beating the students in the 2019 Jamia Millia Islamia attack, which refers to the forceful entry by Delhi police into the Jamia Millia Islamia university during a confrontation with student anti-CAA protesters that started outside the campus on 15 December 2019.[6] The clip released by Maktoob Media shows students pushing furniture to block the door, which the police tear down to enter. A woman, who appears to be a security guard, is allowed to leave as the police enter the library. Many students, including women, can be seen folding their hands, pleading with the police.[7]

In December 2019, Maktoob’s journalist Shaheen Abdulla, who is also a student of journalism in Jamia Millia Islamia, was repeatedly attacked by Delhi Police during the reporting of massive protests against India’s recent Citizenship Amendment Act.[8] He was beaten up and was taken to Holy Family hospital, Delhi. On the same day, more than two thousand students of Jamia joined the protests against CAA in Delhi. [9] The Committee to Protect Journalists, which promotes press freedom and defends the rights of journalists around the world, had condemned the police action on Journalists including Shaheen.[10]

On 23rd January 2020, Maktoob journalist Shaheen Abdulla was detained in Aligarh. Shaheen was in Aligarh to report on the anti-CAA protest led by women in Shahjamal. [11] [12] He was released after around four hours. “When I was covering the protest, some policemen asked me to come with them to the police station. I showed them my Press card, but they didn’t acknowledge it and repeatedly called me an antankavadi [terrorist].” he told The Hindu.

Maktoob Award

An award was declared for the best online writer of the year 2016 that gradually received favorable responses from people.[13] Vykari Aaryatt, a Dalit research scholar, received this award for her article “Balalsanghathinum jaathiyund” (Caste of Rape). [14]

Media Campaign

Following the Christchurch mosque attacks in New Zealand, Maktoob Media shared a powerful video on social media of 100 people, including Rohingya refugees and immigrants to Europe and world-renowned rights activist and journalist Yvonne Ridley, saying Daud Nabi's final words of peace.[15] Daud Nabi, a 71-year-old former Afghan refugee, greeted 'Hello Brother' to the white supremacist who barged into the mosque he helped found in Christchurch and killed 50 worshipers. The Maktoob Video got global attention and the international media outlets including Al Jazeera and Daily Sabah carried this video. [16]

Reception

Maktoob journalist Shaheen Abdulla won the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) Award in the print and electronic media category in June 2020. “Shaheen is a committed young journalist of substance and promise,” the award committee said. Shaheen’s ground reports on anti-CAA protests in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi Pogrom received the recognition.[17]
