Malleus Rock Art Lab (or Malleus) is an Italian Art collective created by Urlo, Poia and Lu in 2003.

Urlo and Poia are respectively the bassist/vocalist and guitarist of Ufomammut, an Italian Psychedelic Rock band formed in 1999.

Biography[edit]

Origins[edit]

Malleus began in the late 90’s creating artworks for the underground music scene, with several different pieces for record covers, music fanzines, website and gig poster designs.

At the end of 2002 Malleus entered the Poster Art scene of today, creating their first handmade silkscreen poster for "The Artifacts of Improbable (AOI)".[1], an event to celebrate the Poster Art at The Gallery at the Trocadero Theatre, Philadelphia.

Since then, Malleus have created screen prints for rock acts such as Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Deftones, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Robert Plant, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, Melvins, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Sleep, Linkin Park, The Prodigy, The Dresden Dolls, The Mars Volta, Mogwai, Motorpsycho, Monster Magnet, Muse, Sonic Youth and many others all over the world.

Malleus explores all kinds of visual art forms, from illustration to video to hand made silkscreen printing: during the years, Malleus realized also movie posters (like the Dario Argento poster serie in collaboration with the English Dark City Gallery), artworks for books, CD's and vinyl, paintings and illustrations.

The collective is also member of the American Poster Institute (API)[2]

Art style[edit]

The iconography at the base of their work originates from a vast background, and includes not only the figurative arts (in particular Expressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Surrealism, Pop Art, Psychedelic Art) but also comics, photography, cinema and literature.

The main subject is the female form, the primordial goddess from whom everything comes. Usually this is accentuated by occult symbolism worked into arcane textures.[3] Blackened Art Nouveau mixed with elements of Surrealism and quotes from the school of Expressionism glowing in its amber, brought to coin the "Dark Nouveau" term to explain their kind of art.

"In this predominantly American world of rock posters the work created by Poia, Lu and Urlo (Malleus) is immediately recognizable with shades so distinctively European".[3]

All of the trio’s works are based on hand-drawing drafts and reflect the artist's deep love for music.

Techniques[edit]

The main technique is the handmade silkscreen printing. Every poster is hand printed, hand numbered, in a limited edition and never re-printed.

Record label[edit]

At the end of 2005, after working for several years on handmade silkscreens for gigs and events, Malleus decided to put the same effort, quality and attitude into the record industry by starting their own totally independent, open source and DIY record label called Supernatural Cat. Originally the label was created with the idea to produce the new works of Ufomammut in order to keep control of their own music.

Supernatural Cat is interested mainly in finding new and original bands and inspired music. As of late, the label has only worked with Italian bands, but it intends to find other music that is not closed in by a particular genre.[35]

Every release comes out in a first limited edition run, with handmade silkscreened and numbered covers and deluxe packages made by Malleus Rock Art Lab, including different media supports like vinyl, compact disc and DVD.[36]

Supernatural Cat roster Ufomammut, OvO, Morkobot, Zolle, Lento, Incoming Cerebral Overdrive, and FarwestZombee.
