Shakir Subhan (born 1990 or 1991) popularly known as Mallu Traveler, is an Indian YouTuber known for his budget travel vlogs. As of August 2022, his channel has over 352 million total video views and over 2.67 million subscribers.[1]
Early life[edit]
Shakir was born and raised in Iritty, Kannur.[2] Before achieving fame, he was a salesman in Dubai at a supermarket in Muhaisnah area, living in workers’ accommodation blocks.[3]
Career[edit]
Shakir had a keen interest in travelling and started his own YouTube channel. He began posting videos in early 2018 under the channel "Mallu Traveler". It was his hitchhiking and budget travel videos that gave him the initial popularity.[2] He's first long travel was from Kerala to Nepal budget travel plus hitchhiking.[4]
The youtuber shares his travel adventures, struggles and success as a young male traveler and the various cultures and ways of life around the world. One of his most viewed video, "മഞ്ചു വാര്യരുടെ കൂടെ ഒരു റൈഡ്" / "Ride With Actress Manju Warrier-Chathur mukham",[5][6][7] in which he recorded his 20-minute video with actress Manju Warrier.[8][9][10][11][12]
Shakir celebrated his 1 million subscribers in Dubai.[3] He started a global road trip on his Apache RTR 200 4V in October 2019. He covered Iran, Azerbaijan and Georgia. In 2020, the frontiers were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic thus he went back to his homeland, Kannur. He left his bike with his friends in Azerbaijan.[13] Subhan documented a video of his experiences in the coronavirus isolation ward, which went viral. The vlog was seen by the former minister of Kerala, K. K. Shailaja and expressed her appreciation.[14][15]
Later, on April 2020, TVS Motor Company gifted him TVS Apache RR 310. Shakir published the video of receiving the new bike on his YouTube channel.[13][16]
On January 2022, Shakir along with his wife and two children, started a world tour by road.[17]
