Manas Kumar Das (Bengali: মানস কুমার দাশ)[1] is an artist of Nazrul Sangeet in Bangladesh born to a music family in Comilla during 1959. His father was a classical musician Pandit Surendra Narayan Das (গায়নাচার্য সুরেন্দ্র নারায়ণ দাশ[1]) (1908–1986).[3] His elder sister Alaka Das is an artist of classical music of Bangladesh,[4]. His younger brother Tapas Kumar Das is also an artist of Nazrul Sangeet in Bangladesh.

Music career[edit]

Manas started his professional Music career being enlisted as a singer in Bangladesh Betar, Dhaka during 1976. At present, he is a special artist of Nazrul Sangeet and classical music bearing enlistment number 1014817.[5] He enlisted in Bangladesh Television as a scheduled artist of Nazrul Sangget, classical music and modern songs during 1977. In 1984 he admitted in University of Dhaka as a student of Masters in Political Science department. During this tenure, he became familiar with Professor Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal father of singer Sujit Mustafa.[6] During that period Manas along with Sujit Mustafa, Yesmine Mushtari,[7] Ferdous Ara and Avijit Saha Pinak formed a music group. During that time, all they used to sing together in every program. He along with singer Dr.Nashid Kamal participated a lot of stage and TV shows.

This music family of Comilla is well known in the music arena of Bangladesh. This music family's contribution is briefly prescribed in chapter 2 of page number 87-88 and 102 of a research Paper named Forms and styles of Hindustani music in Bangladesh special reference to khayal and thumri in context of gayaki and tantakari[8] published on 17 December 2015 conducted by Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

Teaching career[edit]

  • During 1987, he started his teaching career as a music teacher in Sangeet Shikhharthee Sammilan (সঙ্গীত শিক্ষার্থী সম্মিলন). At present, he is acting as a General Secretary of this music institution.
  • During 1994–95, he acted as a music teacher in Nazrul Sangeet Department in music school Chhayanat.

Literature works[edit]

  • During 2011, he along with his elder sister Alaka Das published a book on classical music named Raag Manjusha. This book was written by their father Pandit Surendra Narayan Das. This book was published under the banner of Sangeet Shikhharthee Sammilan.
  • During 2015, he assisted to publish Raag Manjori (রাগ মঞ্জরী),[9][not in citation given] a widely appreciated book written by Alaka Das on classical music. Raag Manjori was hugely appreciated by the classical music lovers because of its resourceful contents of classical music raags.
