Mandala: The Devil's Sword (Indonesian: Mandala: Golok Setan) is an upcoming Indonesian superhero film produced by Bumilangit Studios and Screenplay Films.[1] It was announced in 2019 as part of the Volume 1 films in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe which began with the release of Gundala in 2019.[2]

The character Mandala has been adapted into live-action film before in 1984 directed by Ratno Timoer. The film, titled The Devil's Sword after the first book in the Mandala comic book series, stars Barry Prima and Advent Bangun.[3]

Development[edit]

The film was first announced in August 2019 ahead of the release of Gundala.[2] Joko Anwar, who wrote and directed Gundala, was announced as the executive producer who will oversee the development of all Volume 1 films in the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe.[4]

Casting[edit]

Joe Taslim (The Raid, Star Trek Beyond, The Night Comes for Us) was announced as Mandala, a warrior who is a skilled martial arts and sword fighter with a special technique called the "rock tidal wave" that could crush rocks without physical contact.[5]
