Manfred Deix (1949 – 2016)[1] was an Austrian caricaturist, graphic designer and a cartoonist. Deix was also active as a musician and crime writer.

Biography

Deix was the second child of Johanna Deix (1920 – 2015) and Franz Deix. He was born in St. Pölten, Lower Austria. Deix grew up there and later, with his parents, moved to Böheimkirchen to run the inn “Zur blauen Weintraube”, which they had leased. His parents wanted Deix to become an innkeeper, a butcher or a tiler.[2] In 1955, he attended the Daniel-Gran-Volksschule, then, for a year, a Hauptschule. From 1960 to 1965, he attended the Bundesrealgymnasium [de] in St. Pölten. In 1965, Deix was matriculated in Vienna to the Höheren Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. Deix was expelled from the university after two and a half years because of a truancy. In 1968, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He dropped out after 14 semesters.

In 1984, Deix married his longtime girlfriend Marietta in Las Vegas. While Deix was in the USA, he met the Beach Boys, whom he held in high esteem, in Los Angeles. In 1995, Deix released a CD titled Musik aus Ameriga, composed of covers of the Beach Boys' songs written and sung by him in Viennese German, with his band Deix & die Good Vibrations Band. Lukas Resetarits was a guest singer.[3] In 1988 Deix had a pulmonary embolism and moved to Klosterneuburg-Weidling after the hospital stay. In 1992, Deix had another collapse related to alcohol. In 2001, Deix met his role model Robert Crumb in his exhibition in Krems.

On 22 February 2009, his 60th birthday was celebrated with a large ceremony at the Karikaturmuseum Krems [de]. Here, a special exhibition was dedicated to him.[4] Deix was politically committed, and campaigned for animal welfare and from 2009 to 2010 for the Animal Rights Party.[5] He suffered a pulmonary infarction in autumn of 2014, which was followed by several months in hospital; as a former chain smoker, he switched to e-cigarettes. After a serious illness, Deix died on 25 June 2016.[6] He was buried in an Ehrengrab in the Vienna Central Cemetery on 8 July 2016.[7][8][9] Deix last lived with his wife near Vienna.
