Marco "Thomoso" Battaglia (born October 7, 1985) is an American libertarian political activist, musician, and podcaster. He was the Libertarian Party's nominee for Attorney General of Iowa in the 2018 election.[1]

Early life[edit]

Battaglia was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1985.[2] Battaglia's mother is Italian. He attended Hoover High School in Des Moines and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

At the age of 18, Battaglia bassist,formed heavy metal band, Dark Mirror, with his childhood friend Eric Wicker and Chilean vocalist, Alonso Donoso.[3] In 2020 he launched a music podcast with Eric Wicker called Heavy Radio.[4]

Career[edit]

2018 Iowa Gubernatorial campaign[edit]

Battaglia ran for the Libertarian Party of Iowa's gubernatorial nomination with running mate Abena Imhotep in the 2018 Libertarian Party Iowa primaries, and was actively involved in campaigning.[5][6]

On June 5, 2018 Battaglia lost the Iowa Libertarian gubernatorial nomination to Jake Porter, but his running mate, Abena Imhotep remained in the race for the parties lieutenant governor nomination.[7]

2018 Iowa Attorney General campaign[edit]

At the 2018 Libertarian Party of Iowa convention Battaglia was nominated as the parties 2018 Attorney General Candidate.[8]

This marked the first time that Iowa featured a two way race between a Democrat and a Libertarian for Attorney General. No Republican candidate ran for attorney general in this election.[9]

Marco Battaglia lost the election to Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller on November 6 2018. Marco Battaglia received 262,131 votes, the most in history by an Iowa candidate for political office that did not align as either Democrat or Republican.[10]

2019 Des Moines City Council At Large campaign[edit]

On June 9 2019 Marco Battaglia announced that he was running for Des Moines City Council At Large. In this announcement Battaglia said he wants to focus on eliminating homelessness, limiting the negative effects of drug use and improving the lives of Des Moines residents with disabilities. [11][12]

With 2,321 votes, Marco Battaglia came in third of seven candidate competing for this office.[13]

Political positions[edit]

Battaglia supports working towards systems of peaceful voluntary exchanges. This includes reducing debts and reducing the size of government, extensive criminal justice reform and the immediate release of those incarcerated for victimless crimes. He supports the concepts of barrier free design, edible landscaping, housing first, the club house model of mental health rehabilitation and the principles of harm reduction.[14][15][3]

Personal life[edit]

Marco Battaglia resides in Des Moines, Iowa with his partner Marrianna. He has two children. Luca and Justice.[16]
