Marco Visconti (born 4 June 1978) is an Italian occultist and musician..[2] He is known for his work with the musical group XP8[3] and Faderhead.[4] Under the name Azrael[1] Visconti is an past officer[5] of the Thelemic organisation Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) in London,[6] and scholar of the occult works of English author Aleister Crowley, the founder of the philosophy and religion of Thelema.[7] Italian science-fiction author Francesco Dimitri pays tribute to Visconti's underground persona through his signature character Dagon in La Ragazza dei miei Sogni,[8] of which a film adaptation was released in 2017, with Visconti-inspired character played by renowned actor Nicolas Vaporidis.

Early life[edit]

Visconti was born in Rome, Italy.[9] He studied political science at LUISS Guido Carli, Religious Anthropology at La Sapienza University in Rome, and Audio Engineering at SAE Institute Milano.[10]

Occult[edit]

Visconti has been involved in the occult since the 1990s [5] when he first joined the Thelemic mystico-magical society A∴A∴, founded by Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones in 1907 as the spiritual heir of the rosicrucian movements and of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

In the early 2000s he collaborated with Labirinto Stellare, a small independent press, to translate the works of Kenneth Grant and Michael Bertiaux in Italian, forging a close-knit working relationship with the latter and being initiated and consecrated in various of the spiritual groups tied to him. Through Labirinto Stellare, Visconti also facilitated several seminars and workshops by Zivorad Slavinski, a Serbian spiritual teacher tied to both Grant and Bertiaux: in 2004 Visconti was ordained into the Priesthood of Ecclesia Gnostica Alba by Slavinski in Rome.

Eventually, he was initiated into the Minerval degree of Ordo Templi Orientis at Khem Lodge in Rome, Italy.[11] During the next few years, he advanced through the Man of Earth degrees of O.T.O., completing the Triad at AMeTh Lodge in London, UK, where he moved in early 2013[7], and serving as the Lodge's Treasurer (one of the 3 permanent Officer roles) for several years[12]. In 2015 he was ordained a Deacon in the Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica.[5] However, following months of heated debate about alleged abuse in the Order perpetrated at every level of the organisation[13], Visconti decided to resign from it in August 2018, telling his version of the story on his own website, in a diary-like blog called The Wasteland[14]

Following the resignation, he re-activated the English branch of Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis, with a public Proclamation of the Gnosis on September 23rd, 2018.

Visconti is also a Freemason[15] belonging to the United Grand Lodge of England and several successive orders, such as the Holy Royal Arch.
