Mark L. Ward Jr. is an American Reformed theologian. Working as editor of Bible Study Magazine,[1] he also advocates for the use of Bible translations that rely on modern scholarly critical editions of the New Testament.[lower-alpha 1] He is best known as the author of Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Bible, which is endorsed by contemporary figures such as D. A. Carson and John McWhorter.[2]

Ward is the creator of the KJV Parallel Bible, an online tool that demonstrates in English the differences between the Greek New Testament textual basis of the 1769 Blayney edition King James Version (KJV)[lower-alpha 2] and a hypothetical edition of the KJV that uses a critical edition instead, the Novum Testamentum Graece.[3] He also belongs to the Textual Confidence Collective, a group of theologians who "resist a postmodern skepticism toward the text of Scripture and any form of textual absolutism that would pick one form of the text as final and above revision."[4]

Notes[edit]

  1. For example, Nestle-Aland's Novum Testamentum Graece, which is used by many modern English Bible translations as the textual basis for the New Testament. This is sometimes called the "critical text", as opposed to the "received text" (Textus Receptus).
  2. That is, the edition most commonly found today in printed form.
