Life and work[edit]
In 1995, Nikodijević began studying music composition at the University of Arts in Belgrade, as well as mathematics and physics. His composition teachers were Srdjan Hofman, and from 2002 onward, Zoran Erić. In 2003, he moved to Germany, where he did postgraduate studies with Marco Stroppa at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart until 2005. From 2008 to 2009 he had private music theory lessons with Bernd Asmus.
Compositionally, Nikodijević uses methods borrowed from mathematics, including fractals and frequency modulation, common in the genre of spectral music. He additionally combines traditional instruments with digitally generated sounds to emulate various elements of techno and pop. His catalogue of works mainly consists of compositions for chamber ensembles, including ketamin/schwarz for trumpet, trombone, guitar, violoncello, piano, two percussionists and live electronics (premièred at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2012). In 2014, during the Munich Biennale, his chamber opera Vivier - Ein Nachtprotokoll was premiered, which is about the life and death of Canadian composer Claude Vivier.
Marko Nikodijević has received several awards for his compositions, including the 2008 composers' prize at the Brandenburg Biennale in 2010, the first prize at the International Gaudeamus Muziekweek in Amsterdam 2010 for cvetić, kućica... - la lugubre gondola [funeral music after franz liszt] and the 2013 Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in Munich. From 2012 to 2013 he was a fellow at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 2014 he was awarded the German Music Author Prize (Young Talent Prize).[1]
