Lawrence Marina Madole (born 1984), known by his stage name Marlaw is a Tanzanian singer and songwriter. Marlaw is well known in East Africa for hit singles "Rita", "Bembeleza" and "Pii Pii (Missing my Baby)" that ruled the airwaves in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The populariy of the songs landed him numerous awards nominations in his home country, across the East African region and even the African continent where he was won several awards.[citation needed]

Career and life[edit]

Marlaw started writing his own songs when he was in high school that he would perform in school and church. He participated in the 2004 East Africa Coca Cola Popstars which aimed at scouting for music talent in the three East African countries of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Although he was unsuccessful, Marlaw has stated that participation in the competition gave him the confidence to pursue a career in music. [1] He would then release his single "Bembeleza" in February 2007 after graduating from high school which became an instant hit across the East African region.[citation needed] He followed with other equally successful singles such as "Rita" and "Pii Pii" before he went silent.

After years of speculation that Marlaw and his fellow Bongo Flava artiste Besta were an item, the two lovebirds attended the 2011 Kilimanjaro Music Awards together thus confirming the rumours. [2] Marlaw did not release new music for the better part of 2010s much to the chagrin of his fans. In an interview explaining his absence from the music scene, Marlaw explained that he had deliberately retreated to the background so that he could rework his art and promised to break the silence by releasing even better music for his fans. [3] Marlaw, however, did not live up to his promise as his silence continued. During this time, newer Bongo Flava artistes such as Diamond and existing artistes such as Ali Kiba had cememented their hold in the industry making it hard for Marlaw to mount a successful comeback. [4] His single "Taa" released in 2019 was not received well by the fans and it was an illustration of how far the once-famed artiste has fallen from the top. [5] Marlaw has since released several other singles that have failed to impress leaving him a shadow of his former self.
