USA Masters West Region Outdoor Track and Field Championship[edit]
USA Track & Field (USATF) is the United States organization for Track and Field and is broken into seven different regions [1]. Every athlete that joins the USATF becomes a member of both an USATF association and an USATF region [2]. The West Region consists of California, Hawaii, Nevada, and New Mexico [28] Retrieved Oct. 15, 2020</ref>.
Through the efforts of David Pain, Masters Track and Field and its first Outdoor Track and Field Championship began in 1968 [3]. The first Masters West Region Outdoor Track and Field Championship competition was held July 5-6, 1975 and continued until today (except for 2020) [4]. The 2019 meet included a complete set of running (sprints, middle distance, and long distance), hurdles, race walk, and field events (high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer throw, and javelin) [5]. The Masters West Region Track and Field Championship has included many past and current records, ten are listed as current Masters American Records and three as current Masters World Records [6]. At the June 2019 meet, Gunnar Linde (age 90) set a Record for the 1500 meter run [7]. The August 1980 National Masters Newsletter reports that "16 age bests" were set at the meet [8]. The 1975 meet included Harold Chapson, Paul Spangler, and Ron Whitney as competitors [9]. The 1976 meet included John Carlos, Harold Chapson, Bob Humphreys (athlete), Nick Newton, Irene Obera, and Tom Patsalis as competitors [10].
