Matamaal is a restaurant brand in Gurugram, Haryana, India, serving Kashmiri cuisine. It was founded in 2015 by Nalini Moti Sadhu and Surender Sadhu.[1] In 2020, The New Indian Express described Matamaal as the first Kashmiri Pandit restaurant in the Delhi NCR.[2]
History
Matamaal was founded in 2015 in Gurugram, Haryana, by Nalini Moti Sadhu and Surender Sadhu.
In a 2021 interview with Mint Lounge, Nalini Moti Sadhu described the restaurant as focusing on dishes traditionally prepared in Kashmiri Pandit households, a style of cooking that had limited representation in mainstream Indian restaurants at the time.[1]
A 2022 feature in The Hindu noted Matamaal’s association with Kashmiri Pandit cuisine through its food offerings and public events, including the service of traditional beverages such as kehwa outside India.[3]
Media reports in 2020 also referenced plans for Matamaal to operate an outlet in Doha, Qatar; the restaurant later ceased operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]
Menu
Matamaal’s menu focuses on dishes associated with Kashmiri Pandit cuisine and also includes selected preparations from the Wazwan culinary tradition.
Media coverage has noted that the restaurant periodically offers regional set menus and participates in food-related cultural events associated with Kashmiri traditions.[4][not in citation given]
