Matt Hunt (born April 2, 1989) is an American-Thai independent journalist, photographer,[1] and environmental conservationist known for his work in Southeast Asia.[2][3] He covers breaking news, cultural events, and neglected conflicts in countries such as Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
His work as a photojournalist and broadcast journalist covers Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Malaysia, most often with a focus on breaking news, cultural events, and neglected conflicts, particularly in Thailand's deep South and Myanmar. Hunt is recognized for his work in environmentalism,[4] conservation,[5][6] infrastructure, and LGBTQIA equality. He was also recognized for doing philanthropic work during the COVID-19 crisis to save elephants in Thailand.[7][8]
Early life and career
Hunt was born at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia on April 2, 1989. He attended the University of Florida, then relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where he worked for technology startups.[9]
Hunt started working with France 24[10] as an English-language correspondent covering Thailand in 2022. In 2023, he became a regional correspondent for the network, expanding coverage from Thailand to Cambodia, Myanmar, and Malaysia. He does regular broadcast reports for TRT, often interviewing prominent political figures and heads of state, including the first interview of Thailand's 30th Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, after his election.[11]
Hunt also produces independent journalism and interviews of prominent figures, celebrities, and politicians on his YouTube channel[12] and other social media networks, including key opposition figurehead Pita Limjaroenrat.[13][14] He has also made appearances on Thai political talk shows including Suthichai Yoon.[15]
Controversy
In 2014, Hunt was an early-tester of Google Glass, a technology which drew the ire of cartoonist Susie Cagle, covered extensively in The Nib.[16] In 2022, Hunt traveled on the inaugural flight between Bangkok and Betong, Thailand with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. He spoke with the Prime Minister and took a photo, leading to the widespread belief that he interviewed the junta leader who overthrew the elected government in the 2014 Coup D'Etat. The Government house denied that there was an interview, stoking media controversy.[17]
