Matthew Brown (born November 1, 1989) is an American entrepreneur, centimillionaire, private equity investor, and infrastructure developer.[1] He is the founder and chairman of Matthew Brown Companies, a privately held investment platform focused on energy infrastructure, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and life sciences.[2] Brown also serves as Chairman of Energent, L.P., a family office focused on large-scale infrastructure and energy investments.[3]

Early life and education

Brown was born in Appleton, Wisconsin.

He briefly attended Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas.[4]

Career

Investment and infrastructure activities

Brown was a founding member of Tremor, later acquired by Procter & Gamble.

He began his career working across private equity and asset management platforms focused on energy, real estate, and infrastructure development, including projects in Hawaii and the western United States.[5]

Through Matthew Brown Companies, he invests proprietary capital across multiple sectors, including energy generation, grid infrastructure, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and life sciences.[6] His work includes gas-to-power development and strategic real estate initiatives.

Energent, L.P.

Brown is the Chairman of Energent, L.P., an investment firm focused on infrastructure and energy-related assets.

The firm previously operated as a registered investment adviser before transitioning to a private family office structure. Energent oversees more than $3 billion in capital across its investment activities.

Aerospace and Virgin Orbit involvement

Brown was involved in transactions and discussions related to assets and intellectual property associated with Virgin Orbit following the company’s financial distress in 2023.[7] His involvement drew media attention in connection with a proposed syndicated financing transaction.[8]

Brown was named as a defendant in a 2024 civil enforcement action brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission related to statements made during his acquisition of Virgin Orbit.

In court filings and related proceedings, Brown denied all allegations of illicit behavior, arguing that the evidentiary record did not support claims of investor harm, financial gain, or involvement in securities transactions.

The SEC initially argued that he lacked the funds to acquire Virgin Orbit, but later acknowledged that he is the beneficiary of a $250 million trust and had planned to syndicate the transaction.

The Virgin Orbit matter, however, has remained the subject of ongoing civil litigation, notwithstanding his successful civil judgments against affiliated Virgin Orbit entities.[9][10]

Investment focus

Brown’s investment strategy emphasizes long-term capital deployment across: energy infrastructure and power generation; aerospace and space-related technologies; artificial intelligence and machine learning; life sciences, including therapeutics and diagnostics; and strategic real estate and industrial development

Personal life

Brown currently resides in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and Oahu, Hawaii.

He was previously married to Tawni Catherine Reynolds; after four years of marriage, the couple divorced on November 1, 2021.[11][12]

Brown maintains residences and business operations across multiple regions and spends the majority of his time at his residence at Papailoa Beach on North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
