Maurizio Cignitti
Maurizio Cignitti (Rome, 24 July 1930 – Rome, 10 January 2017) was an Italian chemist and researcher, known for his work in theoretical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and biologically relevant molecular interactions. He held prominent positions at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health) and contributed to major international negotiations on ozone layer depletion and to the harmonization of European pharmacopeias.
Biography
Maurizio Cignitti was born in Rome on 24 July 1930, the youngest of four children of Francesco Cignitti and Francesca Caronti. Both families had a long-standing tradition: the Caronti and Cignitti families had several general abbots in the Subiaco Benedictine order, while his maternal uncle Bernardo Caronti managed the Subiaco bank. His father ran a small electrical supply shop at the corner of Corso Trieste and Via Nomentana.
Raised in Viale Regina Margherita, Maurizio learned the value of work and responsibility early on. His older sisters – Luciana, who tragically died in childhood, Gabriella, and Matilde – were his first playmates and confidants. During his adolescence, he experienced the fear of World War II, events that left deep but invisible scars and shaped his character.
After completing classical studies at Liceo "Giulio Cesare", he earned a degree in chemistry from Sapienza University of Rome in 1955.[1] He conducted research in the United States at the University of California, Davis, and the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, from 1962 to 1964.
He was a lecturer in General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of Sapienza University, training generations of medical students. He then pursued a scientific career at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, becoming a senior researcher in the 1970s, director of the Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry in the 1990s, and vice president of the Official Pharmacopoeia Commission.[2]
He was appointed Italy's representative in international negotiations on ozone layer depletion, demonstrating diplomatic skill in mediating between competing national interests.
After retirement, the Minister of Health, Rosy Bindi, confirmed his role in the Single Drug Commission and in drafting the European Pharmacopoeia. He was also awarded the title of professor emeritus by the Minister of University, an honor reserved for very few.[3]

His research focused on:
- Molecular models of drug–active site interactions
- Electronic structure of biologically relevant heterocyclic compounds
- Electrokinetic phenomena and chemical-physical aspects related to the quality and safety of pharmaceuticals.[4]
At the institutional level, he contributed to the harmonization of pharmacopoeias and the regulation of traditional plant-based medicines in Europe.[5]
