Meenatchi Gopal is a British Indian artist, author and a political activist. She was born in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu.

Gopal is currently the President of Kalaimaiyam, which is an art collective based in the UK. She is also the founder of Gochi Academy of Creative Arts. She is a member of Rochester and West Kent Art Society, Kent. She obtained her Diploma in Fine Arts from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Canterbury.

Early life and career[edit]

Gopal is the second daughter of India's eminent artist K.M.Gopal. She was born in Namakkal at her mother's birthplace, and later moved to Cholamandal Artists' Village in Chennai where her father was a founding member.

Gopal learned art from her father until his death in 2000 when she was 17. Her mother died in 2004 when she was 21. Following her parent's death, she moved to IT jobs. She worked for companies such as Barclays, BP, and IBM. She moved to the UK in 2015 after her marriage.

Gopal is still fighting for her family membership in Cholamandal Artists' Village. The artists' community has refused the family membership for many of the founding artists despite multiple requests[1].

Artistic career[edit]

Gopal has continuously pursued art as her passion since childhood. She took Diploma in Fine Arts from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Canterbury from 2016-2017. In 2018, she took an art ambassador course from Beach Creatives, Herne Bay.

Gopal reinstated Kalaimaiyam, which was an art collective founded in 1979 in Chennai by her father along with eminent artists such as Kannadasan, V. Ganapati Sthapati, M. S. Viswanathan, Thota Tharani and many more. Kalaimaiyam is doing art festivals every year in the UK, recognising art talents by giving fellowship awards to artists across the world. She is the current President of Kalaimaiyam.

Gopal founded Gochi Academy of Creative Arts in 2019 to encourage creative arts among young audience. She emphasizes creativity over technique[2]. She has authored one art biography book and 4 art catalogues[3][4][5][6].

Gopal has supported many social and welfare activities where a community voice is needed[9].
