Metrobus route 400 is a regional bus route in Surrey and West Sussex, England. The route runs from Caterham-on-the-Hill to East Grinstead via Redhill and Gatwick Airport.[1]
History
Metrobus started operating route 400 on 13 May 2000, replacing Arriva route X38. There was an hourly frequency Monday to Saturday using then new 8.8m Dennis Dart SLF. The route only ran between East Grinstead and Horley. Arriva continued to run a Sunday service until 1 April 2001, when it transferred to Metrobus.[2]
On 11 January 2003 route 400 was withdrawn and replaced with routes 200, 291 and 300.[2]
On 3 September 2011 route 400 restarted operations, running the current route of Caterham-on-the-Hill to East Grinstead. Initially just an hourly Monday to Saturday service ran. On 1 September 2012 a later journey was added Mon - Sat and a 2 hourly Sunday service started.[2]
In February 2025 a large sinkhole appeared in Godstone High Street, closing the road.[3] Route 400, as a result, is currently diverted via Oxted Road and Eastbourne Road (This diversion is still in place - September 2025)[4]
On the 27th September 2025 route 400 will be enhanced to operate every 30 mins Monday to Saturday[5][6]
