Metrobus route 420 is a regional bus route in Surrey, West Sussex and Greater London, England. The route runs from Sutton to Crawley via Redhill and Gatwick Airport.[1]
History
In April 2001 the route transferred from Arriva to Metrobus, the hourly Monday to Saturday frequency was retained but evening services between Redhill and Crawley were withdrawn and replaced by route 100.[2]
In late 2001 due to vandalism the route was diverted away from Preston Lane and Merland Rise after 19:00, and Marbles Way in Tadworth after 18:00.[2]
On 12th January 2003 a new hourly Sunday timetable was introduced between Sutton and Redhill. However on the 10th January 2004 these were cut back to a shuttle from Redhill Bus station to Reigate, Red Cross. In August 2010 they were extended back to Sutton every two hours.[2]
In May 2013 the route was extended from Redhill to East Surrey Hospital and the Whitebushes Estate.[2]
On the 31st August 2024 the route was extended to Horley (A23), Gatwick South Terminal and Crawley Bus Station, 7 days a week. The Whitebushes Estate was cut from the route and transferred to the 460.[3]
In 2025 the routes started to be operated by new double deck Wrightbus hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.[4][5] Surrey County Council invested £16m in partnership with Metrobus to secure 34 hydrogen buses. These buses also operate on routes 100, 430, 435 (single decker), 460 & 480 (double decker)[6]
