Mike DeJohn

Mike DeJohn (born Michael Di Gianni) was an American boxer born in Rochester, New York in 1931 who lived in Syracuse, New York.[1]

Boxing career

DeJohn started his professional boxing career in 1951. He won his first sixteen fights before losing against Ernie Cab and Johnny Cousins.[2] He had ten wins before losing to veteran boxer Jimmy Bivins. DeJohn had another streak of wins before drawing with Neal Welch. After the fight, DeJohn beat ranked opponent Alex Miteff[3] by first-round knockout, himself getting ranked.

Ranked and touted

DeJohn immediately lost to veteran Nino Valdes, bested other veteran Bob Baker and then lost to Nino Valdes again. In 1958 Mike bested Willi Besmanoff but lost to future heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. He also lost a rematch with Willi. In 1959 and 1960 he defeated European Champion Dick Richardson. He lost to Eddie Machen and Zora Folley soon after. In 1962 he beat ranked opponent[4] Bob Cleroux. He had a mixed record against other fighters before losing to George Chuvalo in his last contest.

Achievements

DeJohn was a ranked boxer for many years.[5][6][7][8] At one point he had the fastest knockout ever televised, this being a win over Charlie Powell in 47 seconds. His best victories were against Bob Baker, Willi Besmanoff, European Champion Dick Richardson (twice) and Bob Cleroux.[9]
